Black Screen on all new Connections, SessionHost has to be rebooted

$

hi,

we're suffering from session hosts that produce black screen errors in a RDS 2016 farm.

already connected users can mostly work, all new connections end up with a black screen.

to resolve the error the server has to be restarted.

i can say that

- upon checking the registry for this SID i end up at "ProfileNotifyHandler Class app id {E10F6C3A-F1AE-4adc-AA9D-2FE65525666E} inprocserver32, C:\Windows\System32\gameux.dll".

- starting explorer.exe per taskmgr does not open an actual explorer window although the process appears in taskmgr

- tskmgr, eventvwr, cmd can be started without problems

- affected users appear as active in RDS management

- no third party security software is installed

- farm is fully patched

- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileGUID and ProfileList are ok (no old or .bak entries)

looking forward on how to resolve this without  rebooting the server or a permanent fix

thank you

best regards

Windows Server 2012 R2 showing a blue screen and no desktop!

Hi

We have a Windows Server 2012 Standard R2 which is used merely as a file server. This runs on a Lenovo TS140 ThinkServer with 32GB RAM and RAID 5.

The server just shows a blue screen with nothing else, no desktop or any text whatsoever, bar the mouse cursor on the screen. The mouse cursor moves by moving the mouse. Pressing Alt-Ctrl-Del will not launch the Task Manager. CTRL-Esc will not launch the"Start" menu, nor does the "Windows" key on the keyboard.

The server is actually functional and works, as everyone can access our "Access 2013" database which runs on SQL Server 2014 Standard. Pressing the "Caps Lock", "Num Lock" is also responsive. I don't really want to reset the server by powering it off and back on again, as I'm not sure what the consequence may be.

Has anyone come across this anomaly?

Thanks for taking the time to read this post.

Reconnect RemoteApp users to same session host server after disconnect?

I have a small RDS setup that consists of a gateway, connection broker, and 2 session hosts.  All are running Server 2016.  Session hosts have the same apps installed and are presenting a remoteapp collection to my users.

I'm having an issue where my RemoteApp users are occasionally being disconnected due to connectivity problems (bad internet, poor wifi signal, etc.) and when they reconnect they are being directed to the alternate session host.  At that point all their apps have to be reopened.    Is it possible to configure the connection broker to 'sticky' a user to a particular session host for a period of time?

Remote Desktop Slow Connection to any host

Hi , i am suffering a stranger problem.

I have 5000 computers network and only in 1 i have this problem.

When i log on the machine (name it PC_A, W7 machine) locally, and try to connect to any other machine through RDP, it takes about 1 or 2 minutes to connect. I try to connect to W7, W10, W2008, W2012 and in all cases is the same.

BUT, if i log on PC_B and i use RDP to connect to PC_A , then when i try to connect from PC_A to another machine, it works normal, 5 secods and i m in.

I dont know why, but only locally happens.

Remote Desktop Fails

I have a Windows 2012 server where the Remote Desktop Connection fails after some random time.  Rebooting the server brings back the function.  I would like help is solving this issue or create a fix that does not bring down the entire server which interrupts the business.

RDS Licensing for an Off-Site Disaster Recovery RDS Server

$

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/rds-client-access-license

I was reading up on RDS licensing but I could not find any documentation specific disaster recovery practices. We have a secondary warehouse location we we would like to setup a second RDS server. This server would only be for disaster recovery purposes when the primary site is unavailable. We'd probably just keep it offline except for updates and DR testing.

Our primary RDS server only has about 2-5 people using it at a time, but we might have as many as 25 or more remoting in during a situation where the primary site is physically inaccessible. Are there DR CALs that can be purchased, or do we need to purchase the CALs we anticipate using in a DR scenario ahead of time, even if that DR scenario might be 4 years in the future?

Also, our two sites are very close and only have a ~5ms ping, so we do have the option of just doing a Hyper-V replica instead of setting up a second virtual machine. My main reason for not wanting to do this, however, is that it seems unnecessary to be replicating all that data offsite, and we have limited bandwidth and want to use it wisely. They are also on different subnets so I wanted to minimize the work required to failover. A secondary machine would already have all of the networking configure, so fewer steps need to be taken to get the secondary site operational.

RDS 2012: allow RemoteApp ONLY

Hi,

How can I allow remoteapp only for a usergroup on RDS 2012 (with broker).
If I add users to remote desktop users they also can logon to the server which I don't want them to.

RDP Shadow on Windows Server 2016

I have some dev servers that I need to view other users' sessions on for QA.  When I login (RDP) to these servers and try to run shadow.exe, it tells me "'shadow' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."  I seem to remember doing this with WS2003 without a problem.  Has this changed with 2016?

Server 2016 and "Settings Page Visibility"

$

I'm (still) putting up my Server 2016 implementation of RD. That is going well. However, the users can access (even if not run anything administrative) from the immersive control panel (AKA "PC Settings").
-
Win 10, Creator's Update (1703) has a new "Feature" that allows controlling what is visible/hidden.
-
How do I get this on Server 2016? I was able to install the ADMX files for Windows 10 but despite being visible, there is no functionality behind the setting (I was afraid of that). I downloaded the latest ISO (-3) and installed a copy of it, but it was also missing the "Feature"
-
I would really like to get this functionality on my Server 2016 RDSH machines. Any ideas anyone?
-greg

P.S. I can disable the entire immersive control panel, but that's rather like throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

I've posted the same question @ spiceworks but have received no replies as yet.

Clean install Windows 10 can not RDP via 2012 RD2 RDG.

I have two systems, both clean installs of Windows 10 Pro.  Both systems used to connect to work via a Windows Server 2012 RD RD Gateway.  We saved the RDP shortcut and they both stopped working now.  We create a new short-cut with same or different creds and still does not work.  Failure seems to be when authentication takes place on the RD Gateway server, not the remote computer.  I know this since I removed all creds and enter each manually and this happens when I am asked for the RD Gateway creds.  Now if I connect from any other system it works fine, if I connect from my phone via MS's RDP client it works fine.  I checked event logs both on the client jumping in and the RDG server and there is nothing when this happens.

Error: Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to.  Contact your network administrator for assistance.

Any thoughts?

RDS apps hangs with error 0xe0464645

RDS apps hangs with error 0xe0464645 in unexpected moments.
I can see above behaviour on basic Windows apps like explorer or taskmgr, third party apps like totalcmd and java apps on jdk 1.8.  Amazingly Chrome browser seems to not fail with this error maybe because lack of user interactions like in apps above.

Error occurs for clients on Win7 and Win 10.
Error details from windows server 2016 log is always the same:

Server 2016 End Disconnected Session for particular account not working

$

I am using a remote Server 2016 VPS from a provider and wish to configure a  user account Test to terminate after 1 hour of being disconnected. From the server Admin account I have accessed Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups-> Users -> Test and in the Sessions tab of account properties set Ends a Disconnected Session to 1 hr. However, the disconnected Test session does not close after 1 hr of disconnection. (As shown by Task Manager-> Users which shows the Test account in a disconnected state after more than 1 hr of disconnection.)  I have restarted the server and disconnection still does not occur after 1 hr. Is there something else I need to do?

User Disk Profile and Folder Redirection + RemoteApp fails first attempt

$

I will try explaining the scenario we have there:

We created two RDS collections to seperate desktop sessions from remote app sessions, so in this case we can control who can access which applications:

Collection1: Remote Desktop

Collection2: RemoteApp

Issue 1:

Each collection has it's own UDP (That's by design), so in order to allow users to have the same desktop folder, documents... etc we implemented Folder Redirection to another shared location, and that's worked perfectly.

My question is:

Does that have any impact on performance, because the environment is still fresh now and we don't have much users using it, but I don't know what will happen when the environment grows and users save gigabytes on there desktops?

Issue 2:

The other issue I have here is related to the remote apps:

RemoteApps are installed on collection2 and published inside the desktops in Collection1 by GPO:

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dsadsi/2011/11/30/automating-the-silent-deployment-of-remoteapp-and-desktop-connection/

Running a remote app at the first time a user logs in fails at the first attempt, and it works the second time a user tries. I can't figure out what would cause such a behaviour.. do you have any idea?

Thanks in advanced

Housam Smadi

Memory exhaustion on Win10 Pro via RDP

$

Hello, I'm using freerdp to check RDP availability of a Win10 virtual machine running under Proxmox 5.2 (kvm). The command used is: /usr/bin/xfreerdp /cert-ignore /auth-only /u:$USER /p:$PASS /v:$HOST Every time this command is launched, the svchost.exe process related to "TermService" grows around 8MB in its "private bytes" memory. That amount is reduced to around 5MB if you set the display size in freerdp to 1x1 (/size:1x1). That memory is never returned to the system and in a few days some messages related to "resource exhaustion" are logged and eventually RDP stops working. At that time, that svchost.exe process has more than 10GB of "private bytes" (VM has 20GB total memory). Win10 needs to be restarted for RDP to work again, as restarting TermServices service does not help. Adding memory or a bigger pagefile to the VM only delays the time when RDP stops working, it will eventually fail anyway. I dont know if this is caused by FreeRDP shutting down the connection without notifying the RDP Server properly or if it is a Windows issue or a configuration issue. It's very easy to create a DoS to a Win10 Pro RDP server if you have valid credentials. I haven't tested any other Windows version nor any other virtualization environment. Luckly, it doesn't happend if you dont have valid credentials. Please, give it a look to find out what could be causing this behaviour.

Thanks a lot

Multiple RDP Sessions?

Hi All,

Currently running a RDS setup, via the remote app multiple connections can be established however while using RDP only 2 connections can be established at a time.

Is this feature by design or is this due to configuration/licensing?

Remote Desktop Session Host Windows Explorer Image preview missing

$

We have 2 Windows Server 2012 r2 Remote desktop Session host with Session Broker.

All users cannot preview jpeg images on Windows Explorer (either thumbails and Preview Pane). Instead they can see icons instead preview.

Under Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Make sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked.
Under Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Visual Effects > make sure "Show thumbnails instead of icons" is checked.

All users have this issue, Administrator (builtin) not.

Some months ago the preview works correctly but now the issue is present.

The issue is related to network folders or local folders.

How can I resolve the issue?

Thank you
