One RD Licensing Manager for all servers

$

Hello,

I have several servers in my company and there is a need to connect remotely more users with multiple servers.
Example:
Server1.net.local has an offica installed
Server2.net.local has SQL SMS installed
The server3.net.local has Chrome installed
The server4.net.local is DC and wants to have an RDP license management server installed on it and on servers 1,2,3 to use the RDP license which is installed on the server 4 ( 20 RDP CAL User)
For example, as the first server logs in 3 users, on the second server 2 users, on the third server 4 users, on the fourth server 3 users and Additionally one user caller No. 1 has a simultaneous connection to server no. 1, 2 and 4, user of no. 2 has an open connection to server 1.3 and user no. 3 has an open connection to servers 1,2,3,4.
I still have 5 licenses on the main server for the available licenses.
The remaining servers connect only to the server managing the licenses and check whether they can allow the user to connect or the number of licenses has been used.

The point is that on each of the servers I have installed other software and needs each user to be able to simultaneously connect to more than one server.
However, the SH and Collections configuration consists in creating server farms including High availability (has one DNS entry to different IP addresses and unilaterally separates connections) so that you can connect to servers but you can not connect simultaneously to more than one server which is SH because when you try to connect to the other server, when you are connected to one of the servers, you get the message that the connection has been redirected to the first one and the next connection can not be opened.
I supported this movie:

I will be grateful for the help because I can not find out how it can be configured.

Remote Desktop Session Host Windows Explorer Image preview missing

We have 2 Windows Server 2012 r2 Remote desktop Session host with Session Broker.

All users cannot preview jpeg images on Windows Explorer (either thumbails and Preview Pane). Instead they can see icons instead preview.

Under Control Panel > Folder Options > View > Make sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked.
Under Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Visual Effects > make sure "Show thumbnails instead of icons" is checked.

All users have this issue, Administrator (builtin) not.

Some months ago the preview works correctly but now the issue is present.

The issue is related to network folders or local folders.

How can I resolve the issue?

Thank you

Copy/paste of CF_HTML formatted content not working

Hello,

I did post this issue in a reply in another thread, but though best to create a new post for this issue.

I have a RemoteApp that uses CF_HTML formatted content and the only way this content can be copy/pasted from the app to the local user's computer is if drive redirection is disabled.

This issue affects Windows 7 machines but does work on Windows 10. So seems to point to a bug/limitation in the older RDP protocol.

RDS farm is Windows Server 2016.

Only info I can find online is: https://www.spicelogic.com/docs/WinHTMLEditorControl/KnownIssues/150

and this which only relates to Citrix: https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX221798

Is anyone able to shed any light on this issue and if there is any solution (other than just disabling drive redirection, which is far from ideal)?

Thanks,

How to determine RDP version used in the remote session on the server?

Hi!

I need to determine the version of RDP used by connected client in the terminal session on Windows Server 2012 R2.

For Windows Server 2008 I found this solution:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8863a44e-9393-43f8-8c1f-6180eff08495/how-can-you-tell-what-version-of-the-remote-desktop-protocol-an-rdp-session-is-using?forum=winserverTS

But there is no RDS Manager where I can see session Status in Windows Server 2012 R2. How can I determine RDP version? With PowerShell maybe or something else?

Terminal Server 2016 , explorer.exe crash loop event 1000

I switch our company from Terminal Servers 2008 R2 which worked great to a Server 2016 RDS setup

We have 10 server and around 250 users , and atleast 10 times a day a user will complain about desktop flashing constantly or taskbar stuck, it mostly happens on login but also sometimes while in the middle of a working session, only solution is to sign off and login to another server.

on examining event log i see explorer.exe has crashed with event 1000 faulting module ntdll.dll or kernerbase.dll

if i enable crash dumps for these error and analyze with win debugging it always points to twinui.dll.

i run sfc.exe and dism.exe repairs for my servers,no errors were found.

this is the event

Remote Desktop Services - Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running the Remote Desktop Services role.  Whenever I reboot or restart the "Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector" service , I get the Event ID 36 error:
Redirection of additional supported devices is disabled by policy.

I verified that no such policy exists using RSOP.MSC.  I looked at the following location:
Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection\Do not allow supported Plug and Play device redirection

This is set to "Not Configured".
For fun, I've tried both enabling and disabling this setting (rebooting after each change), and it had no effect on the problem.

Additionally, I verified that the setting was disabled within the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility:
     RDP-Tcp -> Right-Click -> Properties -> Client Settings
          Redirection
               Supported Plug and Play Devices
For fun, I tried this setting both enabled and disabled, rebooting after each change, but this had no effect on the error.

Clipboard redirection does work.

I also followed all the instructions on the following article without success:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee890928(v=ws.10).aspx

In the same domain, there is a Small Business Server, and there it works.

I hope anybody can help me on this issue, because for now my only option is reinstalling the server, and I would rather not because I cannot afford downtime that long.

Thanks!

We have few hundred RDS CAL license in server 1 and New Server 2 having 0 licenses in server 2 . Both are at different locations but in same network with different scope of IP.

We want to move some(about 250) of the RDS CAL License from server 1 to server 2.
Is this technically possible ? ==> Please advise steps
Does it needs microsoft involvement(Such as change in license agreement /Authorization numbers) etc ?  ==> Please advise the process..
Scenerio is like that :

Current
Server 1 ==> 500+ Licenses
Expected

Server 1 (OS 2K12) ==> 250

Server 2(OS 2K12) ==> 250

Switching from Device to User CALS

Hi,

We use a single RDS license 2012R2 server with our Citrix XenDesktop setup. We wish to switch from Device to User Cals. How would this be achieved? Just a single GP with the setting enabled and User selected and then applied to the RDS license server or is their more to it than that?

Migrating a desktop .NET app to RDS

$

Hi,

We have developed a desktop app that uses version 4 of the .NET framework (non-core). The app is written in C#, and uses WPF for the UI. We would like to provide our app to clients via a webpage, and it sounds like we might be able to do this using RDS. Our key requirements are:

  1. No significant changes to the existing desktop app's code.
  2. Clients should be able to log in through our webpage, and be presented with the application immediately. We do not want to host an RDP desktop session within the browser, only the app itself. To the user it should appear as if they are interacting with a web app.
  3. Decent image quality and reasonable performance of the hosted app.

Will RDS fulfill the above criteria easily in its current state? Are there are any good tutorials that will help me get started on testing a prototype?

Thanks a lot,

Remote Desktop Web connection

Dear All,

Is it possible to configure remote desktop web connection on a Windows 10 Pro machine?

I can not find the option in the IIS Windows installation.

Invoke-command in a scheduled task.

I have a script that I need to run against a bunch of servers in an RDS-Collection, with the intent being to cleanup bad profiles and registry entries.

I have this setup as a scheduled task, but it isn't running the invoke-command lines when run through the scheduled task, but is working if I run from a command line or in the run dialog box.

Script is below.

    $RDCB = "groebrdgw01.groebnerassoc.loc"

    Import-Module remotedesktop

    $Servers = Get-RDSessionHost -CollectionName "farm1collection" -ConnectionBroker $RDCB | Select SessionHost

# Clean each server of temp directories and registry items.
    foreach ($Server in $Servers){
        $SessionHost = $Server.sessionhost
        Invoke-Command -ComputerName $SessionHost -Filepath "C:\_marcocloud\Sched_Tasks\PreventTempProifle_RDSH\C_UsersCleanup.ps1"
        Invoke-Command -ComputerName $SessionHost -Filepath "C:\_marcocloud\Sched_Tasks\PreventTempProifle_RDSH\UPDRegCleanup.ps1"
#Write-host -fore yellow "Cleanup done on $Server"
    }

I would note that the task is running under a domain admin level account, and has been delegated logon as a batch rights on all servers.  Also task has been tested with "Run with highest privileges".

Server 2012 R2 RDS Deployment - RemoteApp Issues with Multiple Session Hosts

$

I'm having major issues with a Server 2012 R2 RDS environment when adding an additional Session Host to the existing RDS setup. Here is the configuration so far:-

- 1 x VM running Licensing, Broker & Gateway services

- 4 x VM's running Session Host services (1 = Collection #1, 2 = Collection #2, 3 & 4 = Collection #3)

Before adding the additional Session Host (#4) for Collection #3, everything runs perfect, I can access RemoteApp from RDS gateway and via RDP connection files. However whenever I add the additional Session Host, the collection stops working and I can no longer launch the RemoteApp - the connection begins to load as normal, when viewing "View Details" tab during RDP load process the process stops on "Redirecting to server" and then there's nothing - no RemoteApp. I cannot see any error logs within Event Logs for Connection Broker or existing / new Session Host Event logs. As soon as I remove the new Session Host, everything starts to work again.

I was under the impression that Server 2012 R2 had vastly simplified this process since Server 2008 R2, there is no longer a requirement for Round Robin DNS or Load Balancing because the Connection Broker handles all of this automatically - am I correct? The new Session Host (#4) is an exact replica of the original Session Host (#3), the RemoteApp application is installed in exactly the same file-path and successfully loads when opened locally. I have also re-created the Collection responsible for the 2 Session Hosts, but to no avail.

However, I have noticed that when I try to manually RDP to new Session Host after adding it to Collection #3, I receive the following error:-

Remote Desktop Connection cannot connect to the remote computer.
The remote computer that you are trying to connect to is redirecting you to another remote computer. Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify that the computers belong to the same RD session host server farm

I get around this for Admin purposes by launching mstsc using /admin switch.

Has anybody come across this? It seems simple what I'm trying to achieve but I'm clearly missing something.

Local printing not working in Remote Desktop

$

We setup Remote Desktop Services and made sure options were selected to redirect the local printers on each user's setting. We also made sure the option to block it was unchecked. They can print to networked printers at their location but can't print to local printers at their location. These are printers that are plugged in directly to their computers or laptops. The drivers are installed on the server.

When I look on the server the printer shows that there are documents in the print queue that have error - printing.

I look in the event log and there are error entries for TerminalServices-Printers:

An internal communication error occurred. Redirected printing will no longer function for a single user session. Check the status of the Remote Desktop Device Redirector in the System folder of Device Manager.

Log Name: System

Source: TerminalServices-Printers

Evenr ID: 1103

Level: Error

I look in Device Manager and the Remote Desktop Device Redirector Bus Properties status says, "This device is working properly."

What could be causing these printers to error and not print?

Thank you,

Jessica

Edge/Chrome browser and Remote Desktop Web Access with RemoteApp

$

I guess most of you know that if you use Microsoft Edge or Chrome to access the RD Web Access site (2012 R2) it will not automatically start the RemoteApps but the browser will download the .rdp file and the user have to start it "manually". Anyone solved the way around this or is it just the way it is because it's ActiveX based? I don't think 2016 solves this.

I know you can publish the RemoteApp shortcuts on the user's start menu via the Control Panel -> RemoteApp and Desktop Connections but this is not a solution for us since most of our users are BYOD users.

Slow RemoteApp connection, pauses at "Preparing Windows"

Hello, we're running a Server 2012 R2 server as an RD server.  When I log into the full desktop via RDP it connects fast, however whenever I launch a remote app to that server and click on "show details" while its connecting I see that when it gets to "Preparing Windows" it hangs there for about 5 - 10 seconds before finally connecting to the app.  We connect from Windows 7 systems and are running RDP version 6.3.9600 with protocol 8.1.

Any ideas?

Issues with RDP after RDS install

$

Hello hoping someone has a quick answer. I have a 2012 R2 server I installed RDS on. After I installed RDS I attempted to configure a collection. I install the collection with pretty basic settings. I give it a collection name, I add the local server to the server pool ( its the only option) I remove the domain user group and add domain admin to the "User Groups". I unchecked user profile disks because its not required. I then hit create. It does its thing and comes back with the error " Unable to configure the RD Session Host server <SERVER / FQDN> Invalid operation.

When I hit close the collection is there. I have not been further than this to test anything. There is another issue. After I add the RDS role and do this. When I attempt to RDP back to the same server I can no longer RDP. I get an error the server refused the connection. When I remove the RDS role I can remote back to the device.

I did find this article ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3014614/you-cannot-create-a-session-collection-and-an-error-occurs-in-windows ). This did not help.  Any thoughts would be great.

Black Screen of death on a 2016 RD Session Host

Hi

I have received a call from a customer telling me that he is experiencing the black-screen-of-death issue on a newly installed 2016 RD session Host server. I know there was a fix for that issue in RDS 2012 R2, but I have yet to come across information about this issue in 2016.

Has anyone else seen this issue in 2016?
