Windows Server 2012 R2 RemoteApp - cannot connect from client - problem with TSGateway?

Hi,

I apologase if my question is lame I am a beginer in administering Windows Server. I have created a RemoteApp deployment that worked for a year untill the SSL certificate has expired. After I changed the certificate (and fiddled with configuration prior to change) the remote desktop still starts and I am able to connect my client computer to the webfeed or RDWeb, but as soon as I try to launch a published RemoteApp program the following error occurs:

Translation:

Remote desktop cannot connect to the remote computer for the following reasons:

1)Your user account is not listed in the rd gateway permission list.

2)The name provided is NetBIOS and FQDN or IP address is expected.

I have doublechecked and ensured that my specific user name is listed in the permission list of the Remote Desktop Gateway Manager and also is permitted to use the RemoteApp collection.

My question is where should I verify the name qoted in second part of the error message?

Anybody could direct me how to troubleshoot this issue?

Remote Desktop session disconnect

We have a number of thin clients and standard PC's that access a Windows 2012 R2 server using Remote Desktop.  Each of these sessions start a common program so that the client never sees a desktop on the server just the running program.  Our problem is that after a successful logon if the user walks away from the workstation and the connection sits idle for ten minutes (exactly ten minutes) the session disconnects and the user is required to ctrl-alt-delete to restart the session.  The application program is never affected it is still at the same spot when the user re-establishes a connection.

Brand New Physical Server 2012R2 deployment - RDP Session disconnects and reconnects every few minutes...?

Hello Folks,

Hopefully you can point me in the correct direction here please...

Having reviewed various Internet articles on this issue and tried various fixes we have not resolved the issue as yet.

We have built and configured Windows Server 2012 R2 Standara on a brand new Physical server with all Firmware and drivers from the server maunfacturer updated, all available Windows Server 2012 R2 Updates applied.

Can logon perfectly with RDP Connection Manager from my laptop to the server every time, but after about three minutes or so we get the RDP Disconnection warning "The connection has been lost. Attemptingto reconnect to your session...."

The RDP session goes black and after a minute or so the session vomes back again, never ever experienced this behaviour before we have 20 servers in the same loczation and no others show this behaviour.

I have ruled out network issue as no packet loss or drops.

What makes it more bizarre is using Citrix Goto Assit there are no such disconnects, which makes me belive it is a RDP issue.

The server is not on the dopmain so no GPO have been configured since OS deployment or via Local Security policy.

The server does not have the Remote Desktop Services feature enabled, as we are only looking to utilise the Micriosoft inbuilt 2 x Admin sessions.

Any assistance greatly appreciated please.

Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

$

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

Server 2012 R2 locking down search results ** Driving me crazy

Hello - I would like to disable the RDS users ability to perform a search with the everywhere option.  Current the users can search for things like server manager, Windows backup , etc but I don't want them to have this ability.

Here are a few of the GPO's that I have tried and didn't work:

User Configuration\Administrative templates\Start Menu and TaskBar

Remove See more results / Search Everywhere Link - Enable
Do not search Files - Enable
Do not search programs and control panel items - Enable

This GPO works but only for the Apps view

Search just apps from the Apps view - Enable

Domain computers can’t run RD Web applications when connected from outside company network – Windows server 2012 R2

have a question related to RDweb service.

I have successfully installed RD web role on windows server 2012 R2.

All went ok. I also installed a valid third party certificate.

I can connect from outside to the server and run applications using any devices: Ipad’s, mobiles and laptops.

The problem is that: Any Computer/Laptop that is joined on the domain can connect to RDWEB from outside the company BUT CAN'T RUN PUBLISHED APPLICATIONS. It shows wrong credentials.  Note that from inside company network is working.

What it can be?

Thank you in advance,

2012 R2 RemoteAPP Flashing Flickering Issue

Trying to get my app deployed via REMOTEAPP, but when users access the application through RDWeb, they get an insane amount of flickering.

Setup:

2012 R2 servers, fully patched. Single application deployed through the gateway. Windows 7 clients accessing application across a VPN tunnel. I have tried messing with basically every setting in the remote session host GPO policies to get rid of the flickering but it never helps no matter what I do. Any ideas on things I can check?

Windows 2012 R2 RDS RemoteApp "Protocol Error"

$

One of our customer's is receiving a strange "Protocol Error" when connecting to a RemoteApp via RD WebAccess.  They are able to log into WebAccess just fine and the vast majority of the time are able to launch RemoteApps successfully.  On occasion however they receive the error below (RemoteApp Disconnected - "Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.")

If the user immediately re-launches the RemoteApp it works just fine.

I didn't find anything relevant in the event logs.

  • Their RDS environment is all Windows 2012 R2, with three session hosts, RD Gateway, RD Broker, and RD WebAccess.
  • Affected users already have the latest Remote Desktop clients on Windows 7.
  • Affected users are both local to the RDS servers and across private WAN links or site-to-site VPN's.

Here's a key piece of information - The problem started in April after RDS and the customer's RiverBed configurations were changed to match RiverBed's recommended best practices. Basically RDS traffic began being optimized by the RiverBeds so the compression& encryption settings on RDS was turned down/disabled to allow the RiverBeds to perform this function.

I don't believe that the RiverBeds themselves are the cause of the problem due to the fact that some of the users that experience the intermittent problem are local to the RDS servers, thus their traffic is not going through the RiverBed appliances. I suspect that the so called "Protocol Error" may be related to encryption or compression in RDS but I haven't been able to narrow it down. This conclusion is more due to the fact that the problem started after making the compression & encryption change and not really because of any specific evidence pointing in that direction.

I had suggested to the customer that we reverse the RDS compression & encryption settings (one at a time) as a test to try to narrow the problem. They are reluctant to do this however because making these changes in RDS and the RiverBeds in April made such a dramatic difference in their overall performance - they don't want to go backwards!

I am considering using WireShark to sniff some packets, but because the problem is so intermittent (it can be days between errors) and the fact that I don't know what "protocol" is causing the problem, it is likely to be difficult to come up with a decent enough filter to grab useful data. It would be like drinking out of a firehose!

Anyone else ever see this error? Anyone?

[Win Server 2012] How to connect RemoteDesktop DeviceCAL z UserCAL licences?

$

Hello

We ordered 3 licences "WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL 2012 SNGL OLP NL DvcCAL".
After a while I read about complications with that kind of licences. UserCAL licences are better for us. We can order next licences, this time "WinRmtDsktpSrvcsCAL 2012 SNGL OLP NL UsrCAL".

We have only one Windows Server 2012 with Remote desktop services.
I have some questions about using 2 types of licenes at once.
Can one terminal server use both types CAL: DeviceCAL and UserCAL at once?
Or do I have to use second Windows Server to use UserCAL?

RDS Connection Broker database bug

$

Hi I am having an issue with our RDS server the connection broker database RDCMS is filling up the logs and bringing the db down. It's a windows internal database even though it's in simple mode it wont truncate the logs. When I do a checkpoint I'm getting a failed to flush the commit table to disk in dbid 5 error.

I found that it's known issue and patched in SQL. However since it's a WID I'm not able to fix it this way. I searched for a windows update on this but have not found it.

I've had to restore the database a few times from our backed up VM and recently was able to manually increase the logs to buy time but needing a fix for this issue.

Is there a Windows update that I missed or what is the best way to resolve?

On-Screen Keyboard

Hi,

We are running several RDS 2012R2 servers and some users need to use the on-screen keyboard.
I've created a tile linked to OSK.exe and they can also use the search field on the right-hand side to type and search for OSK.

On all servers users will get the error: On-screen Keyboard does not work any more / Cannot start on-screen keyboard

When an administrator starts the osk it works fine.

How can we make sure users can use the OSK?

RDP into Black Screen then Disconnects 2012 R2

$

I have several servers that the last few weeks all randomnly have started causing connections via RDP to go to black screen for about 10-15 seconds then close the session.

I have checked roll up updates such as KB2887595 are installed, I can console into them from my VM Console, however RDP does not let me in unless a full Reboot occurs, sometimes multiple times.  The fix may be temporary for a few hours, but may quickly revert back from not allowing new connections to log in.

These servers are part of a collection farm, I have disconnect sessions set to 1 minute, idle set to 15 min, active set to never for the connection properties for these farms.

I am at my wits end, cause I have roughly 6-8 servers all behaiving the same way with roughly 600 users hitting this set of servers on a daily basis, this is overflowing my help desk guys and I need a fix or solution...like last week.

Please help!

Hello -

Having an issue with our terminal server that services many users. It works fine for a couple days, then stops processing logins (users connect but login simply hangs). When checking the RDS Manager, we see a ton of disconnected sessions. Reboot the server, and all is well again for a couple days. Can anyone give a pointer in the right direction to solve this?

Thank you!

RDS 2012 R2 wallpaperupdate (BgInfo) on two different servers

$

Hi,

I'm facing the problem, that if I'm logged on onto two different servers in our RDS farm the Wallpaper wich i get is overwritten.

As example: I login into Server A get the created BGInfo wallpaper where the infos about the server A are displayed

Then i Login into Server B and get a wallpaper from Server B . After a refresh on server A i get the wallpaer displayed  wich was created on Server B .

We are using normal roaming profiles.

What i found out is that on the share wich is used for the userprofil under \Profil data\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\CachedFiles the created wallpapers are stored.

How can i stopp this?

Under RDS 2088 R2 those files are only stored locally on the temporary userprofileC:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp\

Black screen at Remote Desktop login to Server 2012 R2

We are running RDS on a Windows 2012 R2 server. RDP connections hang at a black screen every couple of days (approximately 7-10 days) and can only be resolved by rebooting the server (I have configured a scheduled task to do this every night as we have a lot of users connecting to the servers remotely).

This seems to be a known issue and pressing CTRL+ALT+END, Cancel seems to bring up the login screen again but is only a workaround. Does anyone know of a permanent fix?

connecting external users to a RDS farm

I have an 2012 R2 RDS farm set up as follows.

1* connection broker

2* session hosts.

Internal users RDP to DNS address shcl01.company.net(made up name). This is a round robin DNS, connecting the users to one of the two session hosts. There is a connection broker, which is load balancing the sessions.

How do I connect external users to this farm. They will be coming in on a hardware VPN, which can NAT to internal servers. The external users will be from another company, they will not share our DNS.

Installing Remote Desktop Services is failling

Based on my searching, in order to increase the concurrent connections or sessions of the server, we need install Remote Desktop Services and migrate ACL from existing Terminal Server to this server.

My problem is when trying to install below, I'm getting errors 0x800f0922 on Setup logs.
Remote Desktop Connection Broker
Remote Desktop Licensing
Remote Desktop Session Host
Remote Desktop Web Access

I've been searching the internet for the solution, but couldn't find any. But one thing that I noticed is the the server having the below Features installed.
Remote Server Administration Tools\Role Administration Tools\AD Rights Management Services Tools
Remote Server Administration Tools\Role Administration Tools\AD DS and AD LDS Tools
Remote Server Administration Tools\Role Administration Tools\AD DS and AD LDS Tools\AD DS Tools\AD DS Snap-Ins and Coomand-Line Tools
Remote Server Administration Tools\Role Administration Tools\AD DS and AD LDS Tools\AD DS Tools
Remote Server Administration Tools\Role Administration Tools\AD DS and AD LDS Tools\AD LDS Snap-Ins and Command-Line Tools

My Server OS version is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

My Questions are:
1. Is this error is related to RDS and DC do not co-exist? But this is not a DC.
2. My approach on increasings the sesssions/connections is correct?
3. Would like to request if anyone has a better plan.

Any replies will be approciated

Windows Server 2012 R2 RDS Error 20499 Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server

Hello

We recently did a migration of our RDS Server to a brand new Windows 2012 R2 server.

Everytime this error message is logged the user gets disconnected from their RDS session.

So far we tried the following:

- Validate AD health (sites, subnet, replication, sysvol)

- We changed the DisableTCPOffload option as suggested in other posts

- We verified the group policy settings applied

Unfortunately we still haven't found what the root cause of this issue is.

Any suggestion of similar previous experience is welcome.

Thanks in advance!

RD Web + Gateway Server after successful login - cannot contact revocation list for Session Host

$

Hi there,

i recently set up a server in our DMZ with RD Web and RD Gateway role on it.

The RD Web should use the RD Gateway to authenticate which works fine. But after the user tries to connect to a "full desktop session". He gets the warning"revocation check could not be performed for the certificate."

There are some sites out there recommending to not perform the check. But my CRL is on a HTTP server and i let the gateway Server access this address and also opened a port for the ldap query to the internal CA (these are the 2 CRL points).

I can see that the gateway server is not checking any of these or is this a task performed by the client? We want to allow external clients so "importing CAs" is not the solution.

Best regards

Stephan

RDP don't update desktop

We have a Windows Server 2008 r2, which used for consultants. In it we can take a look that each consultant doing right now by Remote Control. And everything works fine except one thing. In sessions usually freezes the image. I thought that this is because RDP properties and changed "PinConnectionBar", "BitmapPersistCach", "BitmapCacheSize", "Min Send Interval" to more relevant sizes. Most of sessions work correctly - i can assume control of the session and take a look on the consultant work. In one session I still can't do what. If image freeze once, it gonna be so even if i reload my PC and all RDP connections. I make RDP options even bigger than before, but it still didn't work.  Now then i assume control i see last PrintScreen of the Consultant desktop, i see how clocks in the left angle changing, i see how cursor in the Shell console twinkle and that is all.
