RDSH 2012r2 Installing Apps with SCCM

$

I was hoping someone would clarify the change user /install command for us if deployed via SCCM.

Currently we have an in house application that has quite a few updates from our programmers. In the past we usually manually install these to our remote desktop session hosts with the change user /install command.  We used to have 2 RDSH so this made things easy with the manual process.  We now have 9 of these servers.

We would like to create packages and deploy this via SCCM 2012.  There is not much information out there on SCCM deployment to RDSH servers.  Our question is can these deployed via SCCM without the Change user /Install command?  If this is an MSI installer does it automatically put the server in install mode?  Or does the MSI installer need to have the switch incorporated into it as well from our programmers?

If anyone has more information on this topic in a link somewhere we would greatly appreciate it.

Idle Timeout on reconnected sessions not displaying correctly

Hi all,

I'm running into a problem with idle timeout not being displayed correctly in the Connections-overview.

As soon as the connection is disconnected, the idle-counter starts running.

When I reconnect, however, the idle-counter keeps running, instead of being reset to 0.

Reconnect is done from the same machine, same Client IP-address.

Connection is made through an RD Gateway-server.

Setting up a windows werver with RDS, what licences do i need?

$

Hi Folks,

sorry if i will be asking stupid questions. I am pretty new to windows server operating systems, so far i have only used linux for servers, and windows 7 for the occasional game.

I have a program, that i need (want) to run on a terminal server, and have 6 clients accessing the program (via RemoteApp if possible). As far as i have understood, i will need the following Licenses for that: 1 Windows Server license (e.g. 2012 R2), 6 CALs for accessing the server, 6 RDS-CALs (really? i need an extra license to use the RDS?) and of course the os licenses for the clients (they have windows 7 & windows 8 installed, this should suffice right?).

My questions are:

1. Is this correct or do i need more/less/different licenses? Is it ok if i buy OEM-CALs? I find cheaper offers for them on the internet. Is there any drawback when using them?

2. I haven't gotten that far with my research yet, but it seems that i need some kind of an extra server (or virtual instance) as a Domain Controller. Do i really need that? Will i need an extra license for that?

3. Is there any way to test this whole setup before buying all those licenses? Or do i need all the CALs and so on from the beginning on? I have access to Server licenses (for the server os) from my university, but of course i would not be allowed to use them for use in a non-educational environment. I could use them to test the setup first though, but i can not find CALs in my university's microsoft store.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my (beginner) questions!

Server 2012 RDS - User Profile Disks - Errors during Logoff

$

I have set up a test Server 2012 RDS collection (Single Server for now) and implemented User Profile disks.

I have two problems.

First: My generic test user can connect and does successfully use the user profile disk as expected. However, atlogoff, the system event log contains these errors:

The error (NTFS 137) is: The default transaction resource manager on volume C:\Users\ts3.test encountered a non-retryable error and could not start.  The data contains the error code.

The warning (NTFS 50) that concerns me is:

It appears that the user profile disk is being "disabled" or "disconnected" before the profile data is completely written at logoff. What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Second:

Update: A post from Mike Connor on the following page: -LINK- solved the problem described below.

My administrative user always logs on now with a temporary profile. At the beginning, the UPD was working and mounting. That stopped working. In attempting to troubleshoot, I logged the admin user off and deleted the UPD disk file from the share. I remember it working again after generating a new UPD disk file in the share. Soon, it quit working again. I deleted the UPD disk file again from the share and ever since, it has never regenerated a new UPD andalways logs on with a temporary profile.

Remote Desktop Apps external

I have a strange problem, our RDS run perfectly internally but when a user attempts from outside, he can not start an Remote App it says it can not find the server.

but if we try from a PC that is not in our domain, or a phone with remteapp on there is no problem. Do you have any idea what this could be due to

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

$

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

Terminal Services runs much slower on network than external connections.

$

Hello all,

My client is experiencing slow performance to their Terminal Server.  When working with a consultant, who is at least 3000 miles away, they connected to the consultant via a screen share application (Teamviewer, WebCentral, etc) and the consultant then RDP'd back into my client's RDS server.  Even with the double trip, the responsiveness of the consultant's RDS session was blazing fast compared to local clients on the network.

This is very confusing to me given that the local network should have the fastest connection to the server.  All clients are experiencing the slower response time (thus why it wasn't identified until screen sharing a distantly remote user).  While the local response times are not unworkably slow, they are slow enough that now seeing how fast an external user can use the RDS server, they want it fixed.

Not that it should matter, but here are the details on the rest of the network:

-1 virtual host, 2 processors, 128GB RAM, SAN

-9 virtual servers hosted on it.

My biggest confusion comes from the fact that internal and external users are hitting the same RDS server, so the experience should be the same, if not the external users being a little slower due to the distance.  It seems like external users are getting higher priority to resources, but I wouldn't even know how that would be set up and I built the RDS server.

Please let me know where I should look and if you require any further information.  I rarely post on forums but this one has got my brain twisted.  :)

Windows Server 2012 RD Connection Broker Installation

I am unable to install RD Connection Broker in Windows Server 2012 Physical machine, I have tried many different resources and techniques, yet cannot find a solution, may be this is happening only to me.  I have even tried to install all components on a single server but it fails again, there are no failure logs nor setup related logs under c:\windows\logs .  I have read somewhere about SQL requirement and did install SQL on the server I am trying to install RD, please help me with a step by step (though some online resources talk this as a straightforward installation), for me this has not been so straight.

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

Where is the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool in Server 2012 ?

This is an MMC snap-in found on earlier servers, even if RDS is not installed.  In Server 2012, even if the Remote Desktop Session Host role is installed, this tool is still not available.

I'm looking for the Server 2012 tool to adjust security settings like TLS authentication, High encryption level, choice of TLS certificate, NLA, etc.

Thanks!

RDS 2012 - HTTP & UDP Gateway Connections Reset

$

Hi

I have a single Windows 2012 R2 RDS server, which acts as all the RDS roles, including RD Gateway.

I also have an Windows 2012 R2 IISARR server setup to reverse proxy 443 connections to the server, and have port 3391 open on our firewall to allow UDP connections.

In short, if I connect using an RDP 8 client, I get three connections as expected. One HTTP and two UDP. If I connect using an RDP 7 client, I get one RPC-HTTP connection, again as expected.

The problem is that whereas the RPC-HTTP connection is stable, the HTTP & UDP connections disconnect every 2-5 minutes. The client screen goes black and a Reconnect Attempt 1/20 windows is displayed. Each time though the connection re-establishes itself and the session is not reset.

In the gateway manager, monitoring page, you can witness these connections disconnecting and re-connecting. It's very puzzling. The event logs acknowledge the disconnect, stating reason 0.

On the Windows 8 clients, I've tried the recent hotfix 2897602 and tried turning off Windows Location Services. But that doesn't help.

I've read a lot about UDP and RDP8, with some saying it doesn't work properly and that you should turn it off. However, I have it turned on as I was having problems scrolling PDF files in the remote session, which the UDP connections fixed.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I've done so much research and spent so much time on it...

Thanks

Andrew

2012 R2 compared to 2012

Is remote desktop in R2 significantly better than 2012 Standard in regards to latency? From what I have read the new version has enhanced data compression. Is this enhancement noticeable specifically if the remote client has a 3 mb connection to the net?

Printing in RAW format from a remote session does not work

$

I have an application which need to print using the RAW format.

I followed the guide here and it works fine when the application runs locally but not from a remote session.

It is possible to print from the remote session using the "normal" print functions (e.g. from Notepad).

There are no errors reported from the WinSpool method calls nor any indications in the event log in the remote session or local computer.

Is the RAW format not supported or is there a way to find out what the problem is?

Deployment Properties - Select Existing Certificate

We are building a Remote Desktop Services environment using Windows 2012 R2 servers.

What is the significance of "Apply the certificate that is stored on the RD Connection Broker server" option in "Select Existing Certificate" dialog when configuring "Role Service" certificates?

It seems that Remote Desktop Services can be configured using the Server Manager from any domain member server so why the emphasis on RD Connection Broker server?

Thank you in advance.

Web Access with one to one certificate authentication

Hi

Using 2012R2 with all RDS roles on one xox (test purpose).

I have configured the RD web access and gateway, so its possible from the internet to access the server through https.https://server.domain/RDWeb I have a thrusted 3.part wildcard certificate on the domain and it works fine.

What I want is to protect the https://server.domain/RDWeb to require a client SSL certificate (selfsigned). I tried to add this to the website and are asked for certificate, but get a runtime error in the browser and from the eventlog on the server:

If I change the APPpool from Integrated to Classic pipeline I'm able to get to the web form where I can enter username/password but I just get "The user name or password that you entered is not valid. Try typing it again."

So how is it possible to get it all combined so we require a client certificate to be able see the RD webaccess and preferable get SSO as well? I'm able to get it work on seperate sites, but not combined.

Thanks

Can't deploy a Virtual Desktop Collection - no error shown

Dear all,

I'm trying to create a Virtual Desktop Collection as a prototype for a future project, but I'm unable to deploy the collection. My enviroment is Windows Server 2012 R2, with separate machines for the broker and the hyper-v server.

We tried deploying a Windows 10 image and now a Windows 7 image (both Professional version). The deployment starts and is able to create the template, but then fails without specifying the reason.

The log shows the following error:

<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">

- <EventData><Data Name="arg1">DVBasico</Data><Data Name="arg2">DVBasico</Data><Data Name="arg3" /></EventData></Event>

In general view, the message is:

DVBasico: Pool DVBasico creation failed. Reason:

Any ideas - I've enabled the RDMS UI Log according to this site but nothing usefull is recorded.

Kind regards,

Basic theme corrupt, black boxes in apps when connected

$

Hi....

On one of our Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Host servers we have the following problem.

--Not working example:

THE PROBLEM

-- Working example:

WORKING

---

So black boxes all over the place. When I troubleshooted this as admin I found that switching the theme to "Windows" under Windows standard theme  made the black boxes go away. But switching to the "Windows Basic" them makes them appear again.

So:

-- How do I fix the basic theme? As this is the theme regular users uses and they have no option of changing theme. RemoteApp technology is used.

-- Or possibly, as I think it works fine with the "Windows" theme, how do I apply this to all users logging in to the server?

Also, I have tried to find a solution on this on the forum, the internet and be general troubleshooting. No errors in the event log in Windows......

Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you in advance.
