Remove/Disable User Profile Disks UPD - server not part of farm

$

I want to create a template/clone from a RDSH server which is already part of a farm.  However I find that the cloned server's rename/sysprep causes temporary profiles to be created for each and every subsequent logon.  I suspect this is caused by using UserProfileDisks and ACL/SID permissions issues on the UPD share?

So I need to introduce a step which removes the RDS UPD settings for the new cloned server, however at this stage it's NOT strictly part of an RDS deployment, and has no network connectivity and so it's orphaned.

How can UPDs be disabled without RDS Server Management functionality?  Powershell?

Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -DisableUserProfileDisk

??

Update - this fails with: A remote desktop services deployment doesn't exist on <new server name>...

Is there must be a way to revert UPDs back to traditional logon profiles?

Thanks

WS 2012 R2 RDS - low resolution - blue screen problem

Hello, I have a problem with connection to the WS2012R2 with Motorola handheld with low resolution (320x320). I know, that this device has really low resolution, but our company owns quite a lot of these devices and they are quite new, so I need to solve this issue. The problem: After connection to the server (WS2012R2), I can only see blue screen. After clicking somewhere, I can see Metro interface, but when I run something through Metro or I want to jump to the desktop from Metro, the blue screen appears again. The programs and windows are executed through Metro, but I can't see them, because that blue screen. The problem is resolution. It doesn't matter on the device or the RPD client. If I have resolution lower than 500x500, this strange blue screen appears. But interesting is, that if I connect to the server with resolution bigger than 500x500 and then I take over the session with device with resolution 320x320, everything works fine. The problem appears only on the OS WS2012R2. There is no problem with Windows Server 2012 and older. I recorded this behavior. You can check it: http://youtu.be/Es0QBzDHDDw. Do you have any idea how to solve this issue? THANK YOU!

Remote Desktop Access Blurry image at full resolution

Hi Guys, Recently i have upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 Professional. When I am using Win 10, the resolution of Remote Desktop (to my Windows Server 2003 R2) is blurry at full resolution at 2560 x 1440 / full screen. The resolution is only ok if i scale it back to 1920 x 1200. Please see screen capture images below. When I was using Win 7, I have no issue with the Remote Desktop access resolution at full monitor resolution. There was no change of monitor, GPU or server equipment (hardware and software) before the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 Professional. Appreciate any advise. Thank you very much.

Cheerios,

group policy for profile path will work for *existing* users??

$

We plan to implement the profile path in group policy for all users who log into our RDS hosts.

It will be done by enabling and configuring the group policy setting in the evening after people have logged off for the night, then there will be more than 4 hours for the policy to properly propagate to all the servers in the cluster.

Will the policy work on already existing users when they log in for the first time in the morning?? -- or would I be better off manually configuring everyone's profile path??

Also, if I've configured the profile path already, can I remove the setting after I've configured group policy?? -- this would have the effect of creating a new username.v2 folder, or the server would see the already existing username.v2 folder?? (This only applies to two users at the moment.)

Thank you, Tom

Redirected com port seems to timeout after a while?

I have a user who needs to use a topaz signature pad on his office pc, but remotes into a server in another office for his EMR software. When he starts the day, the pad works fine on com4 locally and com4 remotely. After a while of seeing patients every so often the signature pad wont work. He has to disconnect and reconnect for it to work. His connection is obviously still there since hes entering notes in the EMR software, yet the device stop talking to the remote sessions. Does this make any sense what so ever?

Thanks!

Server 2012: Local User Profile Disks & DFS

I've been thinking of setting up two Remote Desktop Servers, then using DFS to ensure the Local User Profile Disks are highly available.  Is this a supported or feasable scenario?

RDS Single Sign On

I went through this series of articles to setup the RDS installation:

Then I applied the following:

Using these as reference for the delegation GPO:

And I am still getting the prompt for credentials when I click on the published application.  It gets to the list of published applications just fine.  It is just the ask for the credentials when launching the published application that is still happening and proving to be annoying.

The configuration is as follows:

  • Gateway Server 1
  • Gateway Server 2
  • Broker / Web 1
  • Broker / Web 2

Gateway VIP to load balance the Gateway Servers.  Broker VIP to load balance the brokers.  Web VIP to load balance the web instances.

I have triple checked everything but I must be missing something obvious.  Any input would be great.

I found this in the event log:

Remote application (Calculator) is launched on RemoteApp and Desktop connection (brokervip.domain.com) but no stored credentials are used for single sign on. (Reason - RemoteApp and Desktop connection does not exist)

Thanks.

Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server Printer Redirection Issues

I have been having issues with a new terminal server. The server is a VM (VMWare 5.1) running server 2008 R2 (8GB memory 8 CPUs). My client called in a week or so ago complaining that local printers were not redirecting to the terminal server. When I looked into the issue I found the following event log that correlates with this issue:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Printers
Date: 5/9/2013 1:09:58 PM
Event ID: 1103
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: XXXTERM04.XXX.local
Description:
An internal communication error occurred. Redirected printing will no longer function for a single user session. Check the status of the Remote Desktop Device Redirector in the System folder of Device Manager.

I found the following technet article on this event log: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee890928(v=ws.10).aspx

I then confirmed that the Remote Desktop Device Redirector Bus was enabled and working properly. The next step was to replace the Rdpdr.sys file with another copy. This was replaced with the Rdpdr.sys file on the other terminal server (same specs) that is working properly. We tried to do the registry portion of this fix as well, however the key did not exist on either TS. I did not reinstall Remote Desktop Session Host role as there are multiple applications that would need to be re-installed and reconfigured if this is done.

  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\RDPDR

After rebooting the server the problem went away for most of the next day, however it came back that afternoon. That evening I noticed they were using HP Universal Print drivers on 10 different printers. I set out to remove the UPD and install specific drivers for each of these printers. I completely removed the UPD, however none of these printers had 2008 or Windows 7 64 bit drivers available. Some of them had XP 64 bit drivers, however not all of them did. Since the UPD would need to be installed anyway I chose to simply reinstall the printers with the UPD. Originally they were installed directly on the terminal server via local install by IP address. This time I installed them through a share on the domain controller.

Since re-installing the UPD printers on the terminal server, printer redirection has continued to work. The problem I am having now is the amount of time that it takes for the printer to redirect. It seems to be taking 2-5 minutes after logon before the printers will show up. The original error in the event logs is not showing up anymore. I do see the following event occasionally in the application logs, however there are no errors in the system logs (where printer redirection errors typically show up).

Log Name: Application

My client is onto us to figure out what is taking so long to redirect the printers. This does not seem to happen on the other terminal server that has the exact specs and drivers installed on it. The only difference I can think of is the fact that the other terminal server is used primarily by internal users and the server that is having issues is used by external users (and used a bit more frequently). At this point I am not even convinced that the original problem will not return as it's one of those issues that works for a while when you make a change, then happens again in the next day or week. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Server 2012R2 - SSO without CredSSP possible?

Is it possible to avoid double login without CredSSP in the RDP-client? We have two terminal servers with RD Connection Broker. I prefer that users enter their credentials in the logon-screen of the terminal server. If I do that with CredSSP disabled in the RDP-client, I need to enter my credentials twice.

Server 2012 Remote Desktop dropping local resources & redirection

Server 2012 Remote Desktop, Amazon Web Services (AWS)  (Active Directory / Domain)

I connect with local resources selected for my C: drive and my printers.
Randomly, the redirection to the local resources is lost.
I've had someone look at logs and he noted that the "Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector" has crashed.
In order to get it working again, I restart "Print Spooler", restart "Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector", and then disconnect / reconnect.  (I must restart "Print Spooler" first in order to get this to work.)
Someone suggested that it might be the HP Universal printer driver.  I have removed it, but the problem persists.
The problem might happen when other users of mine are on the system.  But it also happens when I am the only person logged on, and I only have a program running that just checks every 5 minutes to see if my local C: drive is still accessible.

This is driving me crazy, and my clients aren't too happy, either.  Any help will be appreciated.

2012 R2 RD Gateway via ARR Reverse Proxy fails when using MacBook

We have a system setup and working were remote users can access an RD Gateway via a Reverse Proxy (Application Request Routing) perfectly well from Windows clients.

When a user tried to access the system using their MacBook (using the RDP client from iTunes) it is really slow and hangs so much it's unusable. If the same MacBook accesses the RD Gateway without going via the Reverse Proxy it works fine!

Has anyone else had this problem and if so is there anything that can be changed on the Reverse Proxy to help with this problem?

Cheers for now

RemoteFX on Windows 10

Hello.  I am trying to see how video graphics look in Windows 10 using RemoteFX, but am running into issues.

I have the Hyper-V role installed on Server 2012 R2 with RemoteFX enabled.  I'm running Windows 10 x64 as a guest.  If i add the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter to that VM and start it up I can see it start to load windows, but then get a black screen. This isn't just with the Hyper-V console window as i've heard is expected.  I also can't ping the system, remote into it with powershell, or RDP into it.  If i remove RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter and start it up it then boots up fine and ping, RDP, etc work.  So it seems like adding that adapter causes the system to lock up and not complete boot.

Is this expected with Windows 10 on a 2012 R2 Server?  Do i need to use Server 2016 Tech Preview for this to work?  I haven't found updated documentation showing it as required.

My next test will be to try on a Windows 8.1 VM which certainly should work, but just curious if anyone knows more about this.

Thanks

Remote Desktop Connection Manager 2.7 on high resolution screens

hi, i just got a lenovo yoga which has a 3200x1900 resolution screen.  rdp does not render the desktop big enough on a high resolution screen and is unusable.  I was happy to find rdcm 2.2 handles the high resolution fine. but when i upgraded to rdcm 2.7, the remote desktop is much to small to be usable again.

I have played with resolution setting in rdp/rdcm but the problem is the desktop icons are just too small.  I finally back-rev'd to 2.2

does anyone know how i can report this bug to the developer?  or if you know of a way to make 2.7 it work on high resolution screen....

thanks in advance

to be clear, the problem is that on a 3200x1900 screen, the size of the icons in the rdp session is so small its hard to read them.  if i play around with the rdp resolution, i am only making the desktop bigger or smaller, the icons are not scaling to that.  This is different in rdcm 2.2.  in 2.2, the icons are scaled up on a large desktop, making them usable.

Deploying RDS 2012 R2 - ""Unable to install RD Web Access role service on server"

$

I spun up brand new 2012 R2 Core servers to be designated for a Connection broker, and one for Web access.

2 other 2012 R2 servers (full GUI) to be designated for Session Hosts.

From Server Manager on my Windows 8.1 system, logged in as my domain admin account, I am attempting to deploy standard RDS, assigning the roles in the wizard like normal, but after servers are selected and I click "deploy", it appears like it's in progress for a couple mins but then fails with the error:

"Unable to install RD Web Access role service on server "RDSWA01.cafenet.com".

So the RD Connection Broker role service status for server RDSCB01.cafenet.com is "Failed", and RD Web Access role service status is "failed".

my session hosts RDSSH01 and RDSSH02 are then shown "cancelled" by the wizard.

I have no anti-virus running on the servers.

My GPO for User Right Assignment for "Log on as service" has MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID added.

I am not sure what to do here to get it going....

any help appreciated.

RDS License are not being issued but RDP to multiple users is working

I configured and setup RDS licensing on server1 and in the licensing manager I can see there are a total of 5 User license with 0 issued.

So I logged into Server with different user accounts and it still shows 5 available and 0 issued. I'm not sure why it doing this.

Our end goal is to spread these 5 user CALs out over 3 servers.

How to create a certificate from your own CA for RDS VDI host?

$

I have trouble to create and use certificate in my VDI deployment. First, I was having trouble to create certificate as .pfx, as RDS requires it, not .cer, but then I figured out to enable "export Private key", and I got .pfx. Now when I try to assign the cert do VDI deployment, it basically does nothing. It rolls out certificate, but status doesn´t change.

These are the steps how I try to accomplish this:

1. In CA, I create template with Client + Server Authorization
2. I issue the template to CA.
3. In RDS VDI host, I enroll the certificate.
4. In RDS VDI host, I export this cert as .pfx.
5. In RDS Deployment properties, I try to apply the cert, but the status does not change. (stays as not configured)

Am I doing something wrong here? I have some experience of managing CA, but not sure always what I´m doing :)

(previously I played around with the same host, using RDS self signed certs, but now I wish to apply AD CA).

RDP via Hostname Fine, Via IP Slow..

Hello,

On a Dell Server running 2012 R2 within a Domain if I RDP to it via IP address the session will login normal but it is very slow. We have to RDP to the server by IP address in the initial instance which why I can't use FQDN to start with.

If I do however RDP to a 2003 r2 Server in the Domain via IP (which is fine by the way) and then RDP to the 2012 R2 Server using FQNDN it is fine.

Any other servers are fine.

Cheers

Ryan

Licenses are not available for this Remote Desktop Session??

Hello!

I have a Windows Server 2012 which is in a domain, I have setup everything correct (I guess) but I got this warning that I have no licenses?

The Remote Desktop Session Host server is in Per User licensing mode and No Redirector Mode, but license server example.example.local does not have any installed licenses with the following attributes:
Product version: Windows Server 2012
Licensing mode: Per User
License type: RDS CALs

This is the creepy thing, I have installed those licenses and are listed in the Licensing manager?

RemoteFX with Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise Guest

$

We're running Windows 2012 R2 as the server OS (with Nvidia GRID K1 cards) and have a Windows 10 guest OS in a Hyper-V VDI (Gen 1) but we're currently running into an issue with drivers for RemoteFX: It worked fine "out of the box" on a Windows 7 Enterprise guest, but Windows 10 is showing the video card as the default basic video adapter and the other component for RemoteFX in Device Manager named "Microsoft RemoteFX Synth3D VSC Driver" is showing "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

EDIT: Windows 10 Pro gives the message above, Windows 10 Enterprise just gives a black screen after booting (safe mode works OK and shows the driver installed correctly, but booting normally just results in a black screen when the login screen should appear, it also never appears on the network so it seems it doesn't actually finish booting).

Does anyone know if Windows 10 should work as a guest OS in this situation or whether the drivers for it simply don't exist yet? (or that I'm missing something painfully obvious).
