RD session connections windows server 2016 - two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted

$

we have RDS installed in Windows 2016 standard edition and use session-base desktop deployment.

It was working fine for about one year. About two weeks ago, we started to have the following issue:

This computer can't connect to the remote computer.
The two computers couldn't connect in the amount of time allotted. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator or technical support.

When this issue happens, we find some users are disconnected in the RDS-Collections-QuickSessionCollection. But we cannot log/sign off those users, they are always showing there.

BTW, we can sign of those users in the Task Manager-Users.

We can solve this issue by restarting the server. How to fix it without restarting the server?

Thanks!

Remote Desktop into Server 2016 gives black screen. Same issue as bug recently found/fixed in 2012 R2

Is anyone aware of a fix to this issue?

See the post from Sasha (Microsoft): here

Here is a post to the MS KB acknowledging and providing a resolution for 2012 R2:here

To resolve the issue when it happens, i need to kill the TermService service (it won't stop normally as it is in a deadlock state). I can then start the service again and it's business as usual until it happens again.

I can't see any info about this in RDS 2016... Anyone else? MS?

Thanks,

Stephen

I'm experiencing an issue where i can't connect through my newly installed Windows Server 2016 with RD Gateway.

I'm just getting "Your Computer can't connect to the Remote Desktop Gateway server. Contact your network administrator for assistance."

Older versions of Windows 10 doesnt have this issue...?

Any help would be appreciated.

RDP screen goes black after successful remote login

I have a Windows 2008 Server that I have been connecting to once a month remotely to apply OS updates.  Often, I reboot that server and it uses auto-logon to login and run an application.

Today, I rebooted the server and when I try to connect with RDP, I get the login prompt and enter my credentials, I see a few expected messages fly by on the host OS (the last one I see is the word Welcome), but then the screen goes black.

The apps on the server are running successfully because our applications can connect to them, we just can't logon to the desktop of the Windows Server 2008.

I made no configuration changes (I NEVER do) other than to apply the latest Windows Server updates.

I would prefer not to drive to the computers location, or try to coordinate a time to have the server hosting company assist me with troubleshooting; but is there anything else I can do?  Any ideas about what might cause this?

Windows 2016 lock screen wrong keyboard layout

Hi,

We are currently working on implementing Windows 2016 Server with Citrix XenApp but now I ran into a huge issue which I can't seem to be able to fix. This happens with a clean Windows 2016 installation, no Citrix installed yet but I'm just setting up an RDP session to the Windows RDS server. I am on the latest patch level.

So step 1, my laptop (Windows 10 Ent.) keyboard language is US/Internation. I launch RDP and open a session to the server, my keyboard setting is correctly set to ENG INTL.

Now when I lock my screen two issues occur. First of all, the OSK pops up allthough I didn't ask for it. I'm just locking my screen.

So I get rid of the OSK, but what happens now is that my input language changes. Suddenly it's set to ENG-US. The local the OS was installed with:

Next I unlock my screen, and then in Windows my language is still ENG-US:

Now for ENG-US or ENG-INTL this is not a huge issue because most of the time you can still enter your password, but we have people with Belgium and German keyboards that get stuck on the login screen because they are trying to type their password with the wrong layout and thus getting locked out.

Thanks.

Switching from Device to User CALS

Hi,

We use a single RDS license 2012R2 server with our Citrix XenDesktop setup. We wish to switch from Device to User Cals. How would this be achieved? Just a single GP with the setting enabled and User selected and then applied to the RDS license server or is their more to it than that?

RDS VDI using Azure VMs - Not able to communicate between connection broker server and the hyper-v VMs

I have created a VDI setup in Azure VMs. I have created a NAT network in the RDVH server , so as to hyper V Vms to be joined to the domain. But after the virtual desktop collection creation step, I am not able to publish remote app as I am getting an error"unable to retrieve remoteapp programs for the start menu" .ie from the Hyper V VM created in the collection. Please let me know how to resolve this.

Alert me Windows Server 2016 RDSH - Terribly slow / high CPU usage

$

Recently made the decision to setup a new RDP farm based on Server 2016, I'd better went for Server 2012R2....

Our infrastructure

We have one Remote Desktop Connection Broker server, and 2 Remote Desktop Session Hosts, hosting the users.
The users have User Profile Disks being hosted on a 3rd server (a File & Print server).

2 physical servers hosting each a virtual RDP server with 26 vCPU's and 50G memory.
The file and print server, domain controller, a 3rd party mail server and SQL server are as well hosted on the physical hosts. No CPU sharing among different VM's.

Each physical host is equipped with :

CPU : Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v4 (dual 10 core)
Memory
: 196G
Disk
: Dell MD3xxx storage (IO is not an issue, more than 150 megabyte per second is possible, same with latency, no issues there)

Each RDP server hosts around 20 to 25 users.

Our issues :

RDP users complain about a very bad user experience. This behaviour is seen on a wide level. All users experience the issue.
Users are sitting on different locations, so the network towards the RDP servers is not causing the issue(s). The location where the most users are connecting from it's performance is good -> Success rate is 100 percent (100/100), round-trip min/avg/max = 12/15/24 ms.

In general, a high CPU usage is noticed as well. For example doing a speedtest in a browser, pulls more than 20 to 30% CPU (total CPU usage on the 26 cores...).

To be a bit more specific ;

- Outlook (and actually office) works slow in general. Scrolling, browsing through pages, ...
- Icons on the desktop are flickering when the CPU raises to 70 to 80%
- Browsing through windows, minimizing, maximising, ... goes slow.
- Logging in goes slow, takes around 1 or 2 minutes to logon. It starts with a black screen, followed by the task bar, the desktop items, ...
- Opening the start menu, rightmouseclick on different items goes with a delay
- Browsing through a specific news page hangs the browser, en eventually the complete session (for example opening Internet Explorer with the msn.com startpage, causes the browser to "hang" for a number of seconds).

What we've already tried :

- Adding a massive amount of resources (26 vCPU's including 50G memory), even with 1 user, no fluent session feeling.
- Using the VMWare optimization tool. No difference experienced. Used the Windows 2016 RDSH template
- Played with TCP Offload disable/enable settings, no results.
- Doing file transfers from and to the File & print server, they go well.
- Disabling and enabling fair share for network, drives & CPU : no difference

We have the feeling something ... is stopping the server of being fast and quick. But the question is what?

Out of options...

Thanks in advance for your help!

RDS Trusted Publisher Error

$

Hi all - I'm setting up a new RDS 2012 R2 RemoteApp farm and running into the following issue when launching an application:

My domain is actually a .local domain but I have ran the Set-RDPublishName script (https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Change-published-FQDN-for-2a029b80) to change the published FQDN to match the wildcard certificate I have from GoDaddy and created an A record to match the published FQDN to the IP address of the connection broker. Farm consists of

RDS01 - Gateway
RDS02 - Connection Broker/Web Access
RDS03 - Session Host
RSD04 - Session Host

I also added the thumbprint to the group policy "Specify SHA1 thumbprints of certificates representing trusted .rdp publishers" yet I am still getting this error. Can anyone tell me what piece of the puzzle I have missed?

Thanks,
Gary

RDS and SID error with two-way trust

Hey there.. weird one here.. I am testing RemoteApps with Server 2012. All is fine except for when I try and grant access to user in another forest where we have a two-way\forest transitive trust. The error is below.. What is interesting is the trust works fine otherwise. For example, if I try and add a user to the local admin group on the server it works great.. I can even authenticate via RDweb portal from a user in the trusted domain.. any ideas?

Can't find RDS Broker

2012 R2 RDS farm. This has worked well for a couple of years. Recently, i was tasked with building a basic 2 node hyper-v cluster with shared storage. After i built the cluster, i commenced to moving VM's to the new cluster. The move happened w/o problems for all VM's. When i perform a planned failover, the failover happens correctly but when using RDS, you receive "the rd broker can not be found...". I live migrate the broker VM back to its original hyper-v host and you can connect to the RDS farm. Can the broker be in a hyper-v cluster?

RDS licensing problem

Hello!

I have a curious problem with RDS Licencing.

I have 7 RDS Licences and when it is random when some user wants to connect via RDP, he will see a message like that: "The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator."

At that moment there is less then 7 connections obviously.

I have tried to understand what's going on and I've found that in Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager/Operational event log there is info about the connection procedure:

"Begin session arbitration:

User: NS3369234\Manager 1

Session ID: 8"

and the error:

"Session 8 has been disconnected, reason code 0"

The error code could be random. Sometimes 0, and sometimes 12.

Do you have any suggestions about the way I could investigate the problem further or what is exactly causing it?

As a matter of fact, it is absolutely doesn't depend of the client's OS or ISP.

RDS Device CAL not being issued after transferring to new server

Hi all,

I'm trying to transfer my RDS Device CAL from one server to another. Both are running Windows Server 2016 Standard, and are using aworkgroup (not a domain). The Device CAL was working perfectly on the old server.

I have gone through the steps to transfer the the CAL from the old server to the new one. It seemed to work fine: the new license appears in the RD Licensing Manager window on the new server, and has disappeared from the old server. However, the new license is not being issued.

I've changed the following settings at gpedit.msc \ Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host \ Licensing:

  • Use the specific Remote Desktop License servers: Enabled, License servers to use = my server name
  • Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode: Enabled, Per device

Still no luck.

Two potential clues to a diagnosis: (1) in the RD Licensing Manager, there is no mention of Temporary RDS CALs, which do appear on my old server. (2) I'm still in the 120-day grace period

(I can't post screenshots as my account is not "verified").

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

RDS Server Windows 2016 does not hold the default programs when users log off then back on

I have tried profile disks, group policies, roaming profiles but at different sites and locations the Server 2016 will not hold the users default programs settings per user. Has anyone else seen this and if so what did you do about it.

I have 2012 r2 and 2008 r2 farms that do this with no problem. It is driving me nuts.

RemoteApp fails to connect on a single PC

$

I have 2 different customers that both have 1 PC each that will not run RemoteApps from their terminal server.  This started on about 4/15/2018 for the first customer, and the second customer had the issue since at least 4/23/2018.  These are established Remote Desktop Services installations with other PCs able to run the apps fine, and these PCs were able to successfully run the RemoteApps previously.

When they attempt to run the RemoteApps, it immediately pops up an error message stating "Your computer was unable to connect to the remote computer.  Try to reconnect. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator."  However, both workstations can still successfully open a Remote Desktop Session to their respective terminal servers.

I have gone through Event Viewer on the Remote Desktop Services servers and could not find any correlating events. I searched through Application, System, Security, and all of the Remote-Desktop*, RemoteApp*, RemoteDesktop*, and TerminalServices* logs in Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/.

On the client PCs, I do find a correlating event in Microsoft-Windows-RemoteApp and Desktop Connections/Operational. Example:

Server 2016 RDS connections maxing out and crashing dwm.exe?

We attempted a stress load on our server and found users unable to join. The RDS would blackscreen and drop. It happened after 8 users had joined. The performance also was dropping as each connection stacked and after we saw the Event Viewer had 450+ Critical Error 1000 with dwm.exe dwmcore.dll crashing.

Case:
I published several apps on our Windows Server 2016 via RDS.
I connected to our apps via an iPad.
Via the onscreen keyboard of the iPad I could press the Windows Key when magically the Start menu appeared.
I couldn't start an app when I tried to start one via the touchscreen but I managed to do start any application installed on the RDS server via the onscreen keyboard Arrows + Enter key on the iPad.

I could also reach the Task Manager and select the Run command (example Explorer.exe)
Looks like The published apps is just a RDP connection with auto start of the application and with the Start taskbar removed from first sight.

Does anyone have the same issue or does anyone know a solution?
