Limit users to a single RDS session across all servers in collection (Server 2016)

Hello everyone,

I have a Remote Desktop Services deployment consisting of:

  • RD Connection Broker + RD Licensing (one server)
  • RD Web Access + RD Gateway (one server)
  • RD Session Hosts (Variable number of servers, usually more than one, autoscaled)

Everything works great except for the fact that sometimes users are able to open sessions on more than one server; please see the (edited) screenshot here: imgur.com/a/In4qk

I have set the Group Policy rule called "Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session" (under Computer Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Connections) to Enabled, however the description for that policy states (emphasis mine):

If you enable this policy setting, users who log on remotely by using Remote Desktop Services will be restricted to a single session (either active or disconnected)on that server.

What I want to achieve is basically the same as what the GPO rule states but across all servers in the collection, ie., in the screenshot above, the user would be reconnected to the disconnected session on IP-AC1F42FF instead of getting a new one on the other server.

What compounds to the problem is the fact we're using User Profile Disks which cannot be mounted multiple times. This means that any additional sessions will have a temporary profile loaded with default settings. That leads to problems with, for example, users' regional and other profile settings which are critical for our application.

RemoteFX enabled RDP Connection for Windows 10 1903 Not working

Configuration:

Hyper-V - Server 2016 Desktop Virtualization Host with all available updates as of 09/12/2019
     -nVidia Tesla M10 with newest Graphics Drivers available - fully support 1903
     -Registry setting for AVC444ModePreferred = 1
     -Registry setting for AVCHardwareEncodePreferred = 2

VDI Desktop - Windows 10 1903 with all available updates installed as of 09/12/2019
     -RemoteFX Adapter added to VM with 2x monitors with 512MB

RDP Client Endpoint - Win10 1803, Win10 1809, Win10 1903 all with all available updates as of 09/12/2019

Scenario 1: RDP from client to the VDI through RDCB or directly: Fails to connect with administrator message

Scenario 2: Connect to VM through Hyper-V Console with RemoteFX enabled - Works flawlessly

Scenario 3: Enable the 'Use WDDM graphics display driver for Remote Desktop Connections' policy - Connection works over RDP but it appears RemoteFX isn't functioning fully as graphics are sluggish. This should not be the fix as the nVidia RemoteFX drivers should be fully WDDM compatible.

Scenario 4: Remove RemoteFX Adapter - Connection works over RDP but is sluggish due to no RemoteFX

Loss of power button options on remote computer after Bitlocker encryption

Hello:

I recently Bitlocker encrypted the system drive of a remote computer and afterwards lost a few of the power button options I would expect to see during a remote session of a Windows 10 1903 computer.

Here are pictures of the options seen before the encryption (during a remote session):

And here are pictures of the options after the system drive was encrypted on the remote computer:

As you can see I have lost the options of sleep, shutdown, and restart after Bitlocker encryption.  Very strange.  If I turn off bitlocker on the remote machine the options are restored, back to normal.  Is this by design or a bug?  I can reproduce problem on two differenct computers.  Not a big deal as I know I have other options to sleep, shutdown or restart, but I would like to know what is going on here.

Remote Desktop Services has stopped working. (64-bit) ok on 32-bit?

Hello, having an issue where a user suddenly is experiencing the RDP program throwing an error and closing out. The last time this happened to a user, this was resolved by clearing out stale Windows credentials on the client.

I've done that, however still experiencing this issue.

I was able to connect through forcing 32-bit mstsc.exe and this stayed connected. However, we have a printer service that requires 64-bit so we need the 64-bit version of RDP to work.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Remote Desktop not working

I am using a Windows 10 PRO 64bit laptop, I've been trying to connect using remote desktop to another Windows 10 Pro PC and I keep getting the message that remote desktop could not connect.  I have a Windows 7 PRO computer that can connect to the same Windows 10 PC so I know it works.  I've tried everything I can think of to get it to work.  Network discovery is turned on, the firewall is turned off, I've allowed remote desktop connection and I can see the target PC when I go to Windows Explorer/Network.  What am I missing???

Enable and Test RemoteFX on Server 2016 Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH).

Hi,

I'm running vSphere 6.0 (esxi 6.0 hosts) as the hypervisor have Server 2016 RDSH VM running on it.
I need to enable and test RemoteFX to increase video performance. After reading other posts and
articles, it would seem that I would need to enable Hyper-V for RemoteFX to work?

Is there no way for me to enable RemoteFX on Server 2016 RDSH to work on vSphere 6.0 instead?
If there is, I would appreciate anyone who could help.

kb4516065 and Win2008r2 RDS intermittend delays

Hi,

We'd like to report an issue with kb4516065 on RDS-server 2008r2, as we have found no issue-reports online.

Monthly kb4516065 has been installed last Friday night, without any issues. The update was considered high priority because we are mainly working on a 5-server RDS-Farm based on Win2008r2.

Since the update we've had multiple intermittent delays and stalls of traffic hourly. Both between clients and servers and between servers of the domain itself.

Crossing off all affected systems one-bye-one we eventually removed kb4516065 from one of the servers yesterday (Wednesday). To find the delays diminish drastically from a single user reporting 10 times between 9am and 10am to (after update removal) 1 delay from 4 users between 11am and 5pm.

Yesterday evening we removed the affected update from all RDS-servers, to get communications working reliable again.
We found no WinOS- or VMplatform-logs reporting the symptoms. No timeout errors, no communication errors from firewall or switches.
Also, no visible signs of CPU stress/pauzes in the VM-platform - as the update also holds fixes for CPU-issues.

As stated above, this is more to report the find. Raise awareness.

I'd also like to add that we found, Removal of the update makes the servers loose domain handshake.
Servers were reacting like main 'domain' and 'domain.local' are two separate networks. Only 'domain.local' was available, but shares were recognized as being from the other 'domain' (and unavailable). Removing the server from domain, running SFC, and reconnecting with domain seems to be the fastest way to get communication working again.

RDS 2016 with UPD ESENT 482, 416, 492, 104 & User profile service 1534 Errors

Hi all,

I found some interesting errors in the event log. They occur every time a user logs off.

The rds is a server 2016 with user profile disks enabled. The UPDs are set to take all data (no folder selection or filtering).

1) [Warning] User Profile Service 1534

Profile notification of event Delete for component {709E2729-F883-441e-A877-ED3CEFC975E6} failed, error code is The system cannot find the specified file.

2) [Error] Esent 482

Integrated webcam not redirect

Hi All,

Is there anyone who can help me. We have a customer which is running server2016 RDS. Now a few users will use skype and wants to use a webcam. At my Windows 10 laptop I have a HP HD camera. At the remote desktop client, I checked the webcam for redirection. But is never appear in a session. I have done some local GPedit settings on the RDS server for remote FX. But untill now without result. Can anyone help me?

Windows Server RDS Freezing with Flickering "Not Responding" in the top bar

We have around 15~ Remote Desktop Session Host servers of varying versions (2012 R2, 2016 and 2019) which are experiencing freezing and flickering issues with "Not Responding" appearing in the top bar and the program being unresponsive when switching between tabs. Other symptoms include screen flickering and, when in Task Manager, the tabs sometimes disappear until you roll the mouse over them. These issues started appearing after the weekend of 23rd March 2019 (23/03/19).

I have been scouring forums looking for other people with the same issue but can't find anyone with similar symptoms except someone called Chris_UKDE and his questions haven't been answered either.

At first, we thought that this was caused by a Windows Update but we have been through all of the updates and cannot find any consistent update or lack of update across the servers that seems to have caused the problem. We thought it might have been KB4489889 but after uninstalling this, the problem still remains.

We have opened a case with Microsoft and we are waiting for them to analyse some logs that they gathered on Friday and they have advised various registry fixes and disabling hardware acceleration but none of these have worked. I am taking to the forums to see if anyone else is a. having any luck with their diagnosis and b. having these issues at all(!) and c. if we manage to fix it, to share it with you so you don't have to experience the same pain we have.

The issue does NOT appear to happen in Safe Mode BUT when running a Selective Startup from MSConfig, these issues still happen, eluding that it's still a Microsoft element causing the problem. We are mainly seeing the problems in Microsoft Office programs but we do get a few issues in other Microsoft programs, such as Internet Explorer/Task Manager and also Chrome.

Most of the servers are running on VMWare ESXi 6.0-6.5 but we do have one native Windows Server with the problem. We have tried updating/uninstalling VMWare tools but this does not seem to fix anything. We also thought this might have been related to the video driver, so we booted the server with "Base Video" options in MSConfig but this still didn't fix the problems.

I am hoping that there are others in the same position as me, looking for an answer but having no forum to discuss it on, hence this post. Any advice greatly appreciated.

RemoteAPP after windows 10 update 1803 are slow and right mouse button is not responding (it reacts only sometimes)

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time... 

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Two RDS Desktop collections on one rdbroker

I am in the process of migrating users off upd’s to fslogix profile containers in our RDS environment. It’s a standard RDS setup with one connection broker, 25 sessions hosts, rdweb and rdgateway servers. Users connect via wyse thin clients that pull the connection information from the wyse portal. All Servers are Server 2016.

I would like to publish another collection alongside the existing collection on the same broker, but this will not work due to having the DefaultTSVUrl pointing to the existing collection.

Is there a way to host two session host desktop collections on the same broker for internal access? I know this can be done for external access via rdweb and rdgateway. I have googled this for days and am getting nowhere

Allow a single user to reboot the Remote Desktop server

OK, I feel like this should be a newb question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere online.  I only allow my users User Level Access on our 2008 R2 server providing Remote Desktop.  When they click on the Windows Orb, Restart and Shut Down are grayed out.  That's good.  However, I have one user I'd like to give permission to reboot the server, but I'd rather do it without giving them Administrative rights to the entire server.  I tried putting the user in the Power Users local group, but that didn't do it.

So, basically, the 2 permissions I need to this user to have are

1 - View currently logged on users via TSAdmin.msc (which they can already do.)

2 - Reboot the server.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

SQL with one RDS Connection Broker

We have one RDS Connection Broker that is up and running using Windows Internal Database (WID). We are going to be disabling TLS 1.0 in the near future, which is needed for WID to function. Is it possible to point RDS to an existing SQL server without adding a second RDS Connection Broker?

RDS Server 2012r2 Black Screen after login

I currently have the following setup:

  • Server A - RDGateway; RD Session Broker; RD Web Access
  • Server B - RD Host
  • Server C - RD Host
  • Server D - RD Host
  • Server E - RD Host
  • Server F - Server hosting User Profile Disks

This has been up and running with no issues for a couple years.

Now, when users login in they get to the login page, enter credentials, and once attempting to login they get a black screen. This black screen will last for roughly 5 minutes and eventually bring them to there desktop.

All of the above mentioned servers are running virtually on 2 Hyper-V hosts running Server 2012 r2 as well.  This issue started 2 days ago.

Rebooting the servers and hosts does not help. 

I also restored ALL servers from a backup except for the server running the user profile disks and that made no difference either.

Please help.

how many RDS servers can man connect with one Connection Broker?

i need an advice from you
we have a server (A) win 2016 (one connection Broker and Web access )in our Data-center with CPU: 2 socket and 4 v processors and RAM: 4GB

but we have also 7 RDS server as session Hosts connected with Server A

we need to build in our data-center a 5 RDS server session host
in this case we have at the end 12 RDS Server and one connection Broker
how many RDS session hosts ٍservers should i connect with Server A?
should i create more than one connection Broker?
how can you help me to make a good plan?

Disconnecting RDP Session Causing Excel C++ Macro to Pause

Hi,

I'm kicking off an extensive Excel macro on a network machine via Remote Desktop Connection that takes roughly 50 hours to complete. The macro VB calls a DLL file to execute a chunk of code in C++ (I did not build it and am not well versed).  Running the macro in an active session works fine, but if I disconnect and return a good time later, I can tell the macro has made zero progress since when I disconnected from the session--I can tell from status bar communication in Excel.  Once I reconnect my session, the macro continues running like I'd never left and no error messages or code execution breaks messages to be found.

It gets weirder--I have 4 options of VMs to choose from, all of which have identical specs (Windows 10, 64-bit Office, 64-bit OS).  The macro will continue to run when I'm disconnected on only ONE machine. The only difference I can see on the one machine that's successfully running the macro, is that it's the least recent to have been rebooted (and therefore updated) of the lot.

I do not have local admin rights on any of the machines. Any incite would be greatly appreciated. 

I'll caveat that I'm kind of a layman in tech speak; I apologize if I chose the wrong categories to post on.

NLA and "Logon To" Restrictions for remote contractors

We have recently hadto deploy NLA security for our RDP sessions, but this has caused issues with Remote Contractors. If we have set a restriciton on the servers they can log on to, RPD fails with a Local Security Authority issue.

Obviously we cannot set the remote contractors computer in the allowed Logon To list, so how do we fix this issue without disabling NLA?

server 2016 hang after installing RDS Role.

Windows 2016 std x64 10.0.14393

license server component is installed on domain controllers. 

I installed the RDS role on this server, selected to install 'remote desktop session host'. 

On the required reboot, server hung on please wait for the system event notification service' screen. After giving it about 20 minutes, had to reset the vm from the vmware console. When it finally came back online,  I could rdp into the server, but could not jump out to other servers. It would attempt to connect, request my password, then return to the rdp screen.  After removing the remote desktop session host from the server (also hung on restart again), I was able to successfully connect. Also, a restart also completes without hanging. 

Ran thru this twice, and second time, the behavior was the same.  I'm not seeing any clues in the event viewer about what might be going on here.
