RDS High Availability - What should it act like?

$

Hello,

Setting up a lab, trying to make an RDS farm be "highly available"... but it doesn't seem right.  1st attempt, not sure what to expect (expecting too much?).  My main question is, can I setup RD Web, Gateway, Broker (server 2016) using MS tools to make them HA?  Ignore session host and VDI for now.  Any tips on what I may have done wrong so far?

Scenario
All server roles configured for HA (trying).  Say an external person logs into RD Web, connects to his office PC.  Can I reboot one of the servers in the HA pairs to do maintenance and not effect the RDP session?  I'm fine with a brief pause in service (IE: screen pauses for a second or two while it switches to another node/host).

My Issue

In my lab, when I reboot one of my web/gateway pairs, the RDP session to a PC gets disconnected and cannot reconnect.  HA isn't working it seems.  Or is that only for Session Host sessions in a RDS collection?

My Lab Server Names/Roles
Running on PC with Server2016 Hyper-V Host

  • HyperV Host Virtual Switch is private network for all VMs
  • All VMs running Server2016 (except Win10 VM)
  • AD (ADDS,DCHP,DNS)
  • RDWebGw-01 (RD web access, gateway, NLB unicast)
  • RDWebGw-02 (RD web access, gateway, NLB unicast)
  • RDB-01 (RD broker)
  • RDB-02 (RD broker)
  • RDSH-01 (RD session host)
  • RDSH-02 (RD session host)
  • Win10 PC (also running sql for broker)

Another tidbit.  When the RDP session to the PC is active, I can see the active session in the RD Gateway Manager on only one of the two gateways.  I had thought I should be able to see it on both Gateways, but I was wrong (in my lab).  Seem right to you too?

Error: There are no available computers in the pool

Hi,

We have an issue with Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2016 servers (RD Virtualization Host).
There are personal unmanaged Windows 10 machines running on these servers.
When you log on the RD Web website it gives an error:

There are no available computers in the pool. Try connecting again, or contact your network administrator.

The user can login with mstsc onto their machine, but through the RD Web website doesn't work.
Normally the website works fine, but once in a while this issue happens.
This issue is fixed when we reboot the RD Website server.
There are no related errors in the eventlogs.

Anybody any idea?

Thanks,

Problem with Strategy group to mount printers on Remote Desktop Host

$

Hello everybody,

We got a problem in our company about strategy group to mount printers for users in RDS 2012 R2.

We need to set printers for user. We use Security Group for this. The user belongs to a security group, and in the strategy group, we configure a printer for a security group (with common targeting).

So we add a user to a group like that he gets printers. The user log in to the RDS, and he sees the good printers.

The problem is, when we remove the user from the security group, printers stay in the session.

In the RDS, we use roaming profile, and I think the problem come from here. When we delete the profile on the file server, to get a new one, the user does not have anymore the printer.

I also tried to create a GPO to delete all shared printers in order 1, before to mount the printers. This is working the first time, but after this, when you add the user to a group, and remove him again, he also sees the printer.

It's a big problem, because a user which doesn't belong anymore to a security group, can use the printer.

Please, could you help me to solve this problem ?

Thanks by advance

Sporadic disconnections from remote RDSH server

Hi guys,

I have Windows Server 2019 with Remote Desktop Gateway role and multiple servers with Remote Desktop Session Host role.

The issue is that sporadically users that are connected to some RDSH servers get disconnected. It doesn't happen on all RDSH servers but just few of them at the same time. For example out of 60 RDHS servers only 5-6 servers can be affected at the same time. Once it happens users can't re-connect in approximately the next 5 minutes.

I can't find anything neither in RDG logs not in RDSH logs.

What might be the reason of that?

Server 2019 and RemoteFX USB redirection problems

Following testing scenario:

- All in one RDS Server (Broker, Host, Licensing and WebAccess)

- Two identical ThinClients with two connected USB audio devices (Lync Phone Edition and USB-Soundcard) - UserA and UserB

- RemoteFX USB redirection enabled

- no GPOs except RemoteFX are set for testing purposes

So if the first UserA logs in, everything seems fine. RemoteFX devices are redirected and both audio devices are set as default (soundcard as default audio and LPE as default communication device) After UserB logs in, his devices are also redirected and set as default - no problems at all. But at the same time as UserB logs in, the default Audiodevices of UserA are unset. If i set the default audio devices manually for UserA, they are unset for UserB.

I have made the same testing on Server 2016 - no such Problems.

We had the same scenario running in productive enviroment on Server 2012R2 for about 5 years, this issue didnt occure.

Remote logins are currently disabled for some users when one session host does not allow new connections

Hello,

The scenario: Remote desktop farm with

  • hardware load balancer
  • 2 x RD Gateway
  • 2 x RD Web Access
  • 2 x RD Connection Broker, configured for HA
  • 2 x RD Session host

A single disconnected user is seen in connections for RD Session Host 1 (RDSH01). I logoff the user, and set RDSH01 to "Do not allow new connections". The user is external, and has initially logged on to RD Web Access from external network via load balancer.

Shortly after performing actions above, the user tries to log on again, and gets an error message while launching an application: "Remote logins are currently disabled".

Why is this? The other session host RDSH02 is fully functioning and allows new connections. My understanding was that these actions would redirect the users to the desired session host, but this does not always seem to be the case.

How to get a Batch Job session to push a zipped file from a remote server to a local machine/server

I have a program that our clients run as a RemoteApp. This program copies files out of a folder to another folder, then zips those files and downloads/copies them off the remote server to the clients local machine or flash drive.

The big picture of what I am trying to achieve is to have the ability for the client to set up a schedule of when they want the files downloaded/copied to their machine out being logged into the RemoteApp.

I have created the interface in the RemoteApp to create a schedule and it then creates a task in Windows Task Scheduler for the program to be run and the files be copied, zipped, and downloaded/copied.

The task created is successful and is executed to completion when the zipped files are moved to a location on the server that Task Scheduler and the Program are on.

However when the path to place the zipped files is on my local machine it fails because it can not access the path location when Task Scheduler is running the program. When the user creates a path to their local machine and runs the program in an Interactive Session the path is as follows:

\\tsclient\C\Data Export files

As I understand it Task Schedule launches the program using a users credentials in a Batch Job session. Is there anyway to let this session connect to my local machine and move the zipped files? Do I need to specify the computer that I am moving the data to IP Address' or some other kind of Identifier in the file path?

USB redirection (remoteFX) working on win10, not on server 2016.

Hi everyone, I'm pulling my hair out on this one...

In short, I easily got USB redirection working on our Win10 Workstations, but can't get it to work at all on Windows server 2016.

Set up:
- All workstations are on Windows 10.
- Servers are on Windows server 2016, we have bare metal boxes, and some VMware hosted servers as well (same behavior). Some are still on trial license, some on full fledged license.
- All Group Policies are set via Active Directory Domain Controller, and are the same for workstations and servers.

So I did all the recommended stuff:
- Enabled remoteFX for clients and hosts. (admins and users)
- Allowed all hardware.
- Enabled encoding for win 2008R2 (I'll remove this one since we dont have any win2008.)
- Do not allow supported P&P device redirection: Disabled.
- Running remote desktop client as admin.
- Enabling local devices and selecting the wanted device (usb joystick in our case).

That works great when connecting from a win10 workstations to a win10 workstation. We see the little computer in the RD title bar, the joystick redirection works, we can unplug the device, plug it back and get it working again.

When connecting to a windows server 2016 (bare metal, VM, trial or full license) the remoteFX computer icon doesn't even show up in the title bar. Again, the Group Policies are indentical and checked with GPresult.

What is different in windows server 2016 ??????

I saw a few people reporting the same issue on a few forums, but never any resolution...

Remote desktop services goes "stale"

Hi there, we are experiencing an issue where we connect to one of our realtime machines and randomly (this happened about a week apart from one another) after you have authenticated, it just goes black and stays that way. I have to reboot the server to get the remote desktop services working again.

I have noticed by logging into the console session on vmware, that after authenticating on the remote desktop client, it doesn't actually connect because my session using the same credentials on the vmware console is still active and untouched.

Here are some errors I see :

An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070102)
&
An error occurred when transitioning from CsrConnected in response to EvCsrInitialized. (ErrorCode 0x80070057)

These logs are also accompanied by Event ID 4005 "The windows logon process has unexpectedly terminated"

I also noticed when I enter the IP for the VM in the remote desktop client and hit enter, the logon screen comes up immediately instead of the couple of ms you normally wait.

Any idea on how to fix this permanently?

Installing owasmime on RDS server (WinServer 2012 R2) doesn't work

$

Good day,

We're trying to install owasmime.msi on terminal server (WinServer 2012 R2) for all users in order to enable them to read encrypted emails.

However, we're kinda stuck. The thing is, if we try to deploy owasmime.msi through normal means (via install software in terminal server from Control panel), it looks like IE can't see addon installed. It IS indeed shows as installed in programs and features, but when you try to open encrypted email in IE it shows that no ActiveX s/mime component is installed, please install it.

If we try to deploy it via GPO with User Configuration - Software installation, then it just doesn't work. According to RSOP, the policy itself is indeed applied. And all the settings from the policy is active BUT the software package that should be deployed with it (owasmime in this case). So every setting in the policy is fine and applied (as well as the policy itself, according to rsop), but software package is not.

I'm running out of ideas, to be honest. One more way to go should be manually copy dlls and register them under every user via GPO.

Looking for help.

Hi.. we cannot get the remote desktop services to operate properly.. the error listed above seems to be the issue.  No remote users can login.  This issue just happened after a quickbooks update and required reboot of the server.  When I try to manually restart the service, the same error message appears.  When I try to view the current RDS configuration it says that a remote desktop deployment does not exist in the server pool?  Please help as we are down and cannot operate.  Thank you for any help!

Windows 10 1903 remote-app repeating keystrokes

Hi,

All our win 10 1903 clients, immediately after been updated from 1803 to 1903 start repeating keystrokes in remote apps. Servers are 2012 R2. RemoteFX cannot be disabled on session hosts servers since that solution causes problems to some of the apps running. Any one facing the same problem ? Any solution?

Windows 10 black screen with remote app

We have started seeing black screens with Windows 10 builds 1709 1803 1809.  The black screens are intermittent and for the most part can be resolved by minimizing and maximizing the remote app.  This leads me to believe this is a screen redraw issue and not a problem with any of the remote apps.

The RDWEB farm is server 2012R2 with 2 gateways, 2 session brokers, 2 web servers.  There are 207 collections with 171 host servers.  Windows 7 w\ rdp 8.1 does not seem to have this issue.

Task you are trying to do can't be completed because remote desktop services are currently busy.

Need to Remove 20-Pack of Per User TS CALs from failed 2008 Server Standard

Hi,

I have an old failed DC(Demoted to a Member Server before it failed) that is a VM. It is the Terminal Server Licensing Manager for remote connections to our terminal server that runs Server 2008 Standard.

How can I forcibly remove these CALs so that they can be transferred to another server running 2008 Standard? Is it possible to migrate/upgrade so that these could be installed on a server running Server 2016 Standard?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated as I have hit a wall
