RDP not connecting to any PC

$

I got a weird problem once or twice a week RDP stops to connect to any PC in network and stucks at "initiating remote connection" asks a correct login/password though

You still can connect to PC that have this issue via rdp, but not to any other PC from them

I've encountered this problem on 2 systems win server 2008 r2 and on win server 2016

Also when this happens ICQ stops working too (and yeah i know its 2019)

Issue resolve itself after a reboot but thats a not ideal solution

Any ideas what it could be?

RDS Deployment plan Licenses

Hi All,

Need a suggestion and recommendation

We are team of 10 and were using 4 servers as Jump servers to access our environment

Team has grown to 30 now and 4 servers with limted 2 rdp sessions are not enough, i have some RDS license

  • Should i install the RDS license on each jump server ?
  • Can i use a single server with RDS license and may give some session based access to team

Please advice and suggest a best solution where i can fulfill the requirement using minimum number of license

Thank you so much

RD Gateway Licensing

Hi,

I found this question (or similar) with many answers many times in this forum. I'm looking for an official answer so I would be happy if someone can refer me to an official Microsoft document.

If I deploy an RD Gateway, do I need to purchase separate CALs for the RD Gateway? For example, if a user connects from the internet through the RD Gateway to an internal machine (to RD Session Host), does this connection consume two licenses? One for the RD Gateway and one for the RD Session Host?

Alternatively, if the RD Gateway role is installed on the same machine as the RD Session Host, and we use the RD Gateway to connect the RD Session Host on the same machine (the idea is to only expose HTTPS traffic on port 443 and not direct RDP on port 3389), do I need two licenses for each connection?

I know that there is no enforcement, I'm looking for the legal answer.

Thanks,
Gabriel

The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login

Using Terminal Server 2008 not able to get non administrator users to login to the remote desktop. Have tried from Windows server 2008 and from Windows servers 2003. Get error login in "The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login" from Windows Server 2008. Error "The requested session access is denied" from Windows Server 2000.

Specify a Program to Start Automatically When a User Logs On Does Not Work in 2016 Server

By default, Remote Desktop Services sessions provide access to the full Windows desktop, unless a program has been specified to start when the user logs on to the remote session. If an initial starting program has been specified, it will be the only program that the user can use in the Remote Desktop Services session. The Start menu and the Windows Desktop are not displayed when the user logs on to the remote session, and when the user exits the program the session is automatically logged off. This feature does not work 2016 server it ignores whatever we specify and always starts a Desktop Session. We are running a work group so group policy is not an option as a workaround. In the 2012 server, 2008 Server it works. Kindly please advise how to get this basic feature to run in Server 2016.

Server 2019 RDP session Black Screen

Have created a new 2019 RDS server...all set up fine etc etc

However, when a user first logs on, they get a black screen and most things unresponsive.

I've not been able to find a resolution to this.  We do have a workaround.  When this happens, on the Connections pane on the server, the user shows Disconnected.  I simply log them off and ask them then to log back on.  Hey ho, everything works fine.

This is reproduceable.

So if anyone having same problem, the above fix does work.  Ok for us as we do not have a huge user base, but for large sets would be a bit tedious for new users to contact IT admin.

My main reason for posting, is does anyone have a fix for this first time logon issue?

Cheers

Ian

Cannot Register Remote Desktop as SCP Windows Server 2008 R2

I have configured the RDS role and issues CAL on a user basis on our Windows Server 2008 R2 and it has been running without problem for a little over five (5) years now. So it came as a shock to me when a month ago I got a message about some type of grace period expiring. I ignored because I assumed I was safe. But since then it has become impossible to connect to the system through RDS.

This is the message I get when I go to the Remote Licensing Manager>All Servers>"Server Name"> Review Configuration and then I click on "Register as SCP". The ensuing message is :

"The remote desktop license server could not be registered as a service connection point (SCP) in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Ensure there is network connectivity between the license server and AD DS".

UPD (User Profile Disk) overwritten at logon

Hello,

since end of november i'm dealing with a curious problem with user profile disks. In some new installed environments with RDSH deployment sometimes an existing user profile disk is overwritten with the uvhd-template.vhdx. In other deployments UPD works like a charm.

Everytime the UPD is overwritten it seems like the user never had a UPD, because the eventlog shows the same entrys like first creation of a UPD for a user.

I tried to get rid of the problem with several methods:

- changing standard gpo for rdsh settings
- deployment without gpo (configuration only via server manager)
- patching server before/after rdsh role deployment
- different antivirus programs on RDSH and Server with UPD Share

For a better understanding for the deployment some details:

UPDs are stored on fileserver (Server 2016) on an hidden share on the server
RDSH (Server 2016) is in most cases a deployment with all roles on one server

I searched the internet for a detailed documentation how the process auf mounting/creating a UPD works or where i can get a detailed logfile about the process but i haven't found something.

Anyone has an idea about this? If additional information is needed feel free to ask :)

Implementing 2nd Remote Desktop Server - Question

Hello, I currently have a Remote Desktop Server "Windows Server 2012 R2" running in a small but busy Accounting Office and it's working great but during last tax season it bogged down from time to time so we are considering implementing a 2nd Remote Desktop Server to help service the load..

Here's some details:

1 - Approx 30 Users running MSOffice and Accounting Apps connecting via RDWeb to run Apps..

2 - The current RDS is a Physical installation with no Gateway as there's no external access at this time to limit security issues.

Question: My plan is to install a New Host "Windows Server 2016" and implement the new RDS as a Virtual Server and I'm not sure if I should tie it back to the current Physical so it can manage the load balancing or if I should just set this up as a separate standalone and just instruct the users how to access each server..

My concern is if I tie it to the Physical RDS and there's a problem with the physical server then will it prevent users from accessing the new Virtual RDS..

Thanks for you help...Scott

RD Gateway CAP and child domain

I am setting up 2019 servers RDS deployment and getting stuck with the Gateway component. My user accounts are all in parent.com and the RD deployment is in child.parent.com domain. I am getting event viewer error the user did not meet connection authorization policy requirements to access RD Gateway server. Error 23003. Is there a recommenced group configuration I should be using? For example: in CAP use universal group in child.parent.com that contains users in parent.com domain. I have tried so many different combinations I think I’m going in circles at this point.

Thank you

Windows 10 1903 RDP With OpenGL 3.0 Application

I need to use Windows 10 RDP from my primary computer running Windows 10 Pro version 1903 to control my headless media server also running Windows 10 Pro version 1903. This was working fine until I upgraded the media server from 1809 to 1903. At that point the ROON application (full Control, Core, and Output PC x64) would no longer start, complaining that it needed OpenGL 3.0. Sure enough, the Remote Display Adapter used on the 1903 RDP client says it only supports OpenGL 1.1.

So, why did this only start happening on version 1903, and what can I do about it other than stop using RDP and install TeamViewer or one of the other alternatives?

RemoteFX looks like it could be a solution, and MS seems to think it is a solution, but I cannot find any documentation of how to set up RemoteFX on Windows 10 to use for a RDP session with a different computer, rather than with a virtual machine on the same computer.

If anyone can provide help, I'd certainly appreciate it.

(moved from the Windows 10 Installation, Setup, and Deployment forum based on advice there)

would DC or DNS help diagnose RDS connection errors?

$

having issues with users connecting reliably and quickly. it can take numerous frustrating tries to connect both over LAN and over Internet.

the remote desktop server does not seem to be collecting any information at all about these failed attempts. users are not getting prompts for passwords, they get messages saying the system is off or not available or remote access is turned off.

mac users get a connection refused error and that's it.

is there another system log on the RDS server (2008 R2) that I should be looking at? the security log is really doesn't help.

would another network system see these events, like a domain controller, or a DNS server? having a heck of a time diagnosing this.

any thoughts appreciated. thanks in advance.

cheers!

How drastically affect latency to the user experience in RDS

$

Hi, I'm about to implement a RDS (Remote Desktop Services Server). Users will use an accountability software, no browser or any other app. I'm considering to put it as a remote app to make the user experience less complicated so they will not confuse remote desktop with local desktop. By now the max concurrent users will be just 7, users access from different cities.

I'll put the server on a datacenter so it can benefit for 24/7 accesibility.

I can put the server outsite my country for less money than on a local datacenter (almost half the money). I'm aware that latency is pretty important (even more than bandwith) for this kind of services so the user can have a better/smooth user experience.

The average time from my site to the external datacenter (outsite my country) is about 65ms.

The average time from my site to the local datacenter (same city) is about 10ms.

Of course, local latency is better than external in numbers. But in real life, this will make a huge difference in user experience? 65ms is not that bad in my opinion.

Thanks.

RDP: Block IP address after failed login attempts

It is surprisingly high the number of RDP access attempts nowadays, regardless of the external port being used. Even more surprising is the fact that Microsoft systems do not have their own blocking feature for offending IPs, which would be appropriate to be enabled by default.

Is there documentation that explains why Microsoft does not include this very important feature, crucial even to the company's own security reputation?

What server-side alternative solutions would you recommend to mitigate botnets and so many other online brute force and similar threats?

Enable Adobe Flash Player on Windows Server 2016

Hi,

I followed a procedure indicated by a product vendor for Adobe Flash activation.

However, now the message appears that the RDS will work for 119 days.

On this server I only do administrative access, it is not an RDP for multiple users.

Will I continue to have administrative access after 119 days?

1- Using Server Manager, Add Role & Feature, Role Based or Feature-Based installation.
2 - On the Select Server Roles page, select the Remote Desktop Services check box under Roles.
3 - On the Remote Desktop Services page, click Next.
4 - On the Select Role Services page, select the Remote Desktop Session Host check box, and then click Next.
5 - Reboot the server after installation.

Thank you.

Cannot connect using to Server 2019 using rdp app on Windows 10, iOS or Windows Mobile

I can connect to my server using the desktop app on Windows 10. (I am not using a gateway.)

If I however use the UWP Windows 10 app (from the Store), or the iOS app from the AppStore, or the RDP app from Windows Mobile from the Store I cannot connect from within the LAN nor from the internet and get the following series of events on the server:

Remote Desktop App with Azure AD

It seems that I am unable to connect to a computer on my network with the Remote Desktop App (trusted Windows Store App on my Windows Laptop or from the iOS App store on my iPhone), while I am able to connect successfully to it from Remote Desktop Connection (old Windows app).

The remote computer is joined to Azure AD (Windows 10 Pro, up to date; again, this works from the old Remote Desktop Connection application on Windows).

Can anyone tell me if connection to a machine joined to Azure AD is supported on the Remote Desktop App or if there is something I need to do to configure it properly?

Thanks.

I have this weird problem that when I am trying to connect to a terminal server with a specific user (let's say "Anna") I am getting this error :

The Group Policy Client service failed the sign-in "Access is denied"

and if I am trying to connect with a different user it's working fine.

anyone have an idea what can cause this error?  (tried already : checking if there is a temp profile .bak in the registry and C:\users\%username% not showing the user profile).
