Teams - Zoom.us - conferencing

$

Hi,

I think we can't ignore video-conferencing thoses days...

Which seems to drive us to Zoom. I gave Microsoft Teams a try, months ago. Not exactly RDSH friendly...business as usual from Microsoft those days. Sadly.

OTOH, zoom is VDI aware; At least there is a per-computer MSI installer.

There are also enhancements for Citrix and VMWare. .https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360031096531-Getting-Started-with-VDI

But bare RDSH is ignored

I've installed the MSI, the GPO administrative templates and it looks OK.  The thing is that my users are still at home using Zoom directly from their computer. When part of the staff return to work with their Dell-Wyse thinclient, they'll probably ask me for an USB camera. Will my RDSH servers cop with the load ..?

So, Anyone to share an experience with Zoom on bare RDSH ?

Remote desktop services installation on new server with already active roles already on that server.

Hello all,

I want to install a new Remote desktop services with a new broker but i want to keep the current roles except the broker ofcourse.

These roles are now been used on the old server but I want to keep these roles.

On the server where I want to install the new Remote desktop services including new broker.

I already have active roles like RD Webaccess and RD Gateway and RD licensing on this server.

The old server/broker are using these roles already from the server which i want to use but i want to use them also for the new broker..

Thats why i want to use this server then i have everything on one server.

So when the old server was setup only a brokerrole was installed on this server and the other roles were installed on the server i want to setup a new remote desktop services.

How can i do this without installing a new role RD webaccess because when i want to a add  the remote desktop services.

It is saying that it will install a new RD web Access role and i want to use the current one.

What wil be the impact and how can I solve this.

We dont want issues with the current RD web access /gateway

It would be great if someone can help me.

Old and new server running Windows server 2012r2

Periodic long response times with 300+ processes running

Hi

We manage a few virtualized windows systems running a mix of windows server 2012R2 and windows server 2019

These are rather small deployments with 2-12 users.

All servers are deployed equally and have the following software installed

 - Active Directory Domain Services (The server acts as a domain controller for the users on the server)

 - Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker

 - Remote Desktop Services Session Host

 - Microsoft SQL server

 - Microsoft Office 2019 (SPLA)

 - Microsoft OneDrive for Business (Server 2019 VMs only)

Each customer has their own virtual server running the above software and the server runs AD for that specific customer only

I do know that this kind of setup is not officially supported by Microsoft, but it worked fine for Windows SBS solutions previously.

The installed versions of SQL server is 2012 SP4, except for one of the server 2019 instances where we have SQL server 2017 installed. The SQL server 2017 is a standard edition, while the others are express editions.

What we are experiencing, especially on the VM with server 2019 and SQL 2017 is that when windows has more that 300 active processes, it starts to give periodic slow downs where basic tasks like sending email, saving excel sheets or invoicing from their accounting software becomes unresponsive. A couple of minutes later, everything is back to normal for 5-10 minutes after which it all starts over again.

As the issue is most easy to reproduce on the server 2019 with SQL 2017, we have focused our current troubleshooting to here. In Microsoft terms this is still a rather small deployment with only 12 active users on the same server at once.

Until now we have tried to increase the resources given to the VM, which normally runs absolutely fine with 4 CPU cores and 24GB of RAM. As we saw a lot of processes sitting and waiting for response for either Exchange Online or Sharepoint Online, we recently increased this to 6 CPU cores to have additional resources available to handle these processes. With either 4 or 6 CPU cores, the users had these slow downs for about 15-25 minutes, but as of yesterday we increased to 12 CPU cores and are now at the cases experienced earlier with contious slow downs over a couple of minutes each.

We have already ruled out a disk performance problem as all virtual machines are running on mirrored nVME setup. From monitoring the storage we can see that there is no queue and no delays on the disks when the slow downs occur.

My theory at the moment is that Windows has a hard time dealing with the 300+ processes and throwing more CPU resources at the problem would not solve anything. But at the same time it seems a bit overkill to split a 12 user system into more servers

Does anyone have similar issues or experience with comparable strange slow downs?

RDS externally getting "Logon attempt failed" - Working internally.

I think Im at the final hurdle with my RDS build. So the platform works perfectly internally. I can browse to the web services (role on the same server as gateway), authenticate and then see the remoteapp I've published (just a test mstsc app). I can then run the remoteapp, I get an MFA prompt on my authenticator app and once I authenticate I log into the remoteapp as expected. No issues there.

I have published the gateway through an Azure v2 WAF and allowed port 443 from the internet on the associated NSG. The backend pool is reporting healthy on the WAF so it can communicate with the gateway. If I try from my home connection I can reach the initial gateway page, log on through initial authentication and see my remoteapp. When I try to run it, it downloads the RDP shortcut but when I launch this and logon (same credentials as before) it immediately returns "Logon Attempt Failed".

Whats more frustrating is that I cant find any meaningful events in the event viewer on the gateway or connection broker that correspond with my logon, so I cant find any meaningful error code other than the generic Logon Attempt Failed from the client rdp window.

Logically it would point to the WAF if internal connections are working, but I may be over simplifying it. Would anyone have an idea where to look to troubleshoot this? Of course I've tried googling it but its such a generic message its like looking for a needle in a haystack. I'd really appreciate any help on this as I think its the last hurdle before this environment is working exactly as needed.

RDP Session creates 2 User Folders

I just created a new user on my DC, I have 2 terminal servers both running Windows Server 2016. When I logon with user via RDP into 1st server, it creates one user folder correctly. On the 2nd server when I login via RDP, it creates 2 user folders; one is just the username and the 2nd is username.domain. What is causing this on the 2nd server? Any ideas? We also setup the users with a custom path to Home Folder. See screenshots below. Thanks!

Can AD LDS be used to specify User and Group rights in RDS Remote Apps?

$

Hi all,

I have a situation with a leased remote stand-alone dedicated Web Server that is also running Remote Desktop Services. It is accessed via the Internet. All our RDWeb users connect over the public internet. This server is not a DC or connected to any AD Domain. I have been advised in another forum that I should not install AD DS on this configuration with a Public IP address on the NIC.

As a result when I try to assign user rights to a particular published remote App in RDWeb I get the error.

"The RD Session Host Server is not joined to an Active Directory domain..."

Can I somehow use AD LDS to assign user rights (or deny them) to certain published remote Apps in RDS?

Thanks for any help

Users frequently disconnect from Remote Desktop Session Host

$

Hello,

We are running six Remote Desktop Session Hosts (RDSH) all on Windows Server 2016, version 1607, OB Build 14393.3659.

About a week or so ago, we noticed that our users are mass disconnecting from our RDSHs. On their end, it tries to automatically reconnect and is usually successful. But we don't know why they are mass disconnecting in the first place.

There is no pattern to when they disconnect. It can be once a day or six times a day and is extremely frustrating to our users (and us). We thought that maybe our GPOs are in a sort of combination that causes the users to disconnect at refresh but the disconnects don't happen every 90 minutes. We checked the event viewer in each server in our RDS environment, and found absolutely no hints or clues. Users that use our VPN, instead of RDS, works fine and no disconnections there. The servers aren't restarting themselves either. It just does a mass drop whenever it feels like and we have no idea what is causing it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to look to see what could be causing this?

Event-ID 20491 while user logoff with UPD

Hi,

normaly the event-id 20491 issue should be solve with this update: KB3192404 (Preview of Monthly Rollup)

But we have this problem still. (on Windows 2012 R2 fullfixed)

Addressed issue where the user profile disk (UPD) does not get unmounted when a user logs off. Therefore, users get temporary profiles and are not able to work with their own profiles during their next logon. The Event ID 20491 with a description of“Remote Desktop Services could not disconnect a user disk for the user account with a SID of <SID>. The error code is 0xAA.93 (or error Code: 0x91.38)will be logged

The behavior after event ID 20491 is different for us. Either a temporary profile is created or the profiles are given consecutive names such as <username>.001, <username>.002 and so on.

BUT the effect does not occur every time you log off. There are days/hours when the logoff works including deleting the local userprofile!

Hint: The UPD is stored on a SMB V3.x share. Offline-Cache and other tricky features are disabled on this share.

How can I fix this error?

Thanks for your help!

Question Black screen RDP and then stuck at configuring remote session

$

This is my last attempt to resolve the issue, before I throw this server out of the window.

This problem is absolutely random and Event viewer is absolutely useless, so as Google results for this case.

I am connecting to my PC via RDP constantly from different computers.
The PC is running on W10 Enterprise 1909. All updated and all updated drivers.

All was working great, till recently it started not to connect from certain computers and to be stuck at "Configuring remote session"
After changing the RDP port to 37879 the problem was resolved, but now very frequently when connecting it will come to a black screen.
Afterwards when trying to connect again it will just be stuck at "Configuring remote session" from any PC.

The PC will be stuck completely, also when trying to access it physically. Restart helps. Then this happens again, absolutely randomly.
Happened also that the connection froze and when trying to reconnect it would come to a black screen and then same issue again..

Please help, give me any direction what to check..

Thanks in advance!

Host linux VMs in Microsoft RDS - VDI

We have all windows in our company but some users need linux for product testing and RnD. Some of our security tools do not support linux like DLP and USB access so we cannot give linux as VM in their laptop/desktop. Can we host Linux (Ubuntu/CentOS/OEL etc) in RDS - VDI (Pooled or personal)? or any plans in near future?

Thanks, Rishi Pandit.

Install RDS on an existing MS SQL Server & Application Server

$

Hello Everyone,

A client of ours has an application for industrial food processing. It's running on a Windows 2012R2 server together with MS SQL Server 2017 (the APP Server). The APP server also has a SAGE50 client with an EDI component for SAGE.

The application's client does not use a client-server software design. Instead, the client exe file is on the APP server and it's is run from a UNC shortcut from each workstation. The latency has increased as we have scaled up, so we installed an RDS server on the same network segment as the APP server to reduce inter-network traffic.

Although the speed and network traffic issues have been resolved by the RDP server, the client executable crashes periodically when it's run from the RDP server. It does works fine when run from Windows 7, 8.1 or Windows 10 desktop PC's.

The developer is saying that in order to use RDP, the RDP/TS has to be integrated into the APP server. He is asking me to install RDP/TS roles on to the existing APP server.

Could installing RDP/TS roles on an existing production server break some of applications?

I am worried about SQL and RDS on the same server. Has anybody seen that before?

Any suggestions?

Blurry App

Hi,

I had fixed a blurry app by setting the compatibility "high dpi" to "Application".

Was OK for at least two users (admin and a regular user). So far so good.

After enabling the RDSH role and restarting the server, the fix doesn't work anymore.

I checked the corresponding key is still there

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

REG_SZ : <path to myApp>

Value : ~HIGHDPIAWARE

Any hint ?

RDGateway Pluggable Authorization | Local Drive not available

Hi,

I am using RDGateway Pluggable Authorization for multi factor authentication using below sample-

https://github.com/microsoftarchive/msdn-code-gallery-community-m-r/tree/master/Remote%20Desktop%20Gateway%20Pluggable%20Authentication%20and%20Authorization%20Sample

Everything works fine. But the local drives of client machine are not available in RDP machine when used pluggable RDGateway Authorization.

Done all the configuration necessary to allow local drive to be shared.

1. In Rdp file ->Local Devices and Resources.

2. Allow all device redirection in Connection Authorization policy.

While with native RDGAuthorization, it's working fine. I can access the Local Drive of client machine in RDP machine.

Can anyone please help, what am I doing wrong?

Remote Desktop Session Services from a Single VM in Azure for remote 3rd Party Erp solution(Tally)

$

Hello All,

I need a solution on below:

Is it possible to run Remote Desktop Session Services from a Single VM in Azure and Use Azure AD services instead of provisioning of separate VM as a domain Controller and DNS server.

This has a reference to run Tally ERP(Single User) application from a Azure VM and accessed from multiple user PC. Also to keep in mind that the client will need to buy additional additional RD CAL licenses for multiple remote sessions from their PCs.

As we need to provide cost effective solutions to as many as new probable clients to work from home in these COVD19 situations. So we will have to go with single VM solution to run the application only.

Thanks and Bye

Problem connecting via RDP

Hello

I have a computer (Mango) that is unable to connect to another computer (Kiwi) via RDP.  Mango is able to remote into all other domain computers and all other domain computers are able to remote into Kiwi.  Mango can ping Kiwi via FQDN and IP and gets a normal response, however RDP tries to connect for a few seconds then says it is unable to connect.

I have tried disabling virusscan and firewall on both computers.  I have confirmed that both computers are using the correct RDP port.  I repaired my windows installation with DISM and sfc.  I still am unable to connect via RDP between these two computers.  Any help is appreciated.
